Just a Little Longer

People will often ask me why I live in Wisconsin. Sometimes I ask myself the same question, especially during our brutal winters. All kidding aside, I love this state most of the time. Spring, summer, and fall here are glorious... especially fall. Autumn, this year, has been nothing short of brilliant. I spent an hour today sitting in a chair on my deck, in the sunshine, taking in the beauty of the breathtaking fall foliage.

I couldn't help but notice, however, among this rainbow of color, that one of the oak trees in my yard is still as full and 'summer green' as could be. I guess it's not ready to enter the current season with the rest of its leafy friends.

I'm actually quite happy about this because once the maple trees are done changing and the branches begin to go bare, the oak tree will just be beginning its own autumn splendor. This offers my family, and our neighbors, the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful, colorful time of year for just a little bit longer.

This brings to mind why it's important to s-t-r-e-t-c-h those things we so enjoy just a little bit longer.

For instance...

Reading a really good book, one you don't want to put down, doesn't have to end with the last page. We can continue 'living it' at a book chat...or even at lunch out with a good friend. 'What book have you read lately that you love?' can be a wonderful back and forth conversation starter.

Seeing a rainbow is wonderful. You can make it last longer though if you grab your cell phone and take a photo. Perhaps even make that photo your computer's background image so you can enjoy it day after day. The same goes for a wonderful vacation...captured in photos in a scrapbook or a framed photo on display can make you smile long after the day you returned from your trip.

What about a delectable stew you enjoy cooking and eating? Make twice or three times the amount...and freeze it for a few evenings ahead when you are longing for that comfort food again and don't want to cook.

How about when you know, in your heart of hearts, that the amazing concert you're experiencing is going to end in three hours? The next day...go to Part 2 of your concert...make a playlist of your favorite band's songs, pop in a set of airpods, and relive that joy whenever and wherever.

What about any day you could think up that you wished would never end? You know the feeling. Maybe it was a day spent with someone you loved? Perhaps it was the day your sports team won the championship game? Maybe it was the day you graduated college, a family reunion, or a 50th wedding anniversary?

No matter what, if we're mindful of these moments, and we don't allow all the TO DOs, chores, responsibilities, and work to take up every ounce of us all the time, we can always close our eyes, and dream ourselves right back to those precious events.

I step back, breathe in, and savor these brief moments in time...and whenever I can stretch them out and enjoy them, I do. I'm sure glad that oak tree has chosen to take its time to show it's fancy clothes, allowing autumn to stick around just a little bit longer.
