____ 1. A clean desk. A cluttered desk makes it hard to work. When a desk isn't organized, ideas and thoughts can become as scattered as the loose pens and papers covering it. So every day, either when I finish at my desk for the day, or before I begin work, I make things orderly. It only takes a few minutes to gather like-things together, quickly file papers that need filing, recycle unnecessary paper, and move things that don't belong there. This has become a sort of ritual which signals inspiration for 'productivy ahead.'

____ 2. Prepping dinner ahead of time and cleaning up. Dinnertime can be hectic, and I like anything I can do to make it less so. There is a French cooking term, mise en place, which means having all ingredients prepped and ready, kitchen tools set out, and pans prepared. Meals come together quickly this way. As often as I can, I also do anything else possible to prep dinner early. I put casseroles together, I make a salad, or I chop onions, etc., or stir together seasonings I will use later. I often line ingredients up next to the stovetop in the order they will be added to what is in a pan. (Sometimes I use Sunday as a prep day and do more than one day's worth of prepping.) Then I clean up. When dinner time arrives, most preliminary work is already done and clean-up time after dinner is greatly lessened.

____ 3. An insulated bottle that is easy to hold. I like to sip my coffee or tea slowly when working at my desk, but I am bothered when my beverage cools too much before I've finished. Likewise, if I have iced coffee, iced tea, or lemonade, I like for it to stay cold for a long period as well. Recently I found an insulated bottle that solves the problem. Hot drinks stay hot for 12 hours, cold for 24. The mouth of the bottle is large enough to add ice cubes easily and to get a brush or a sponge with a handle in it to clean. Plus, the bottle is easy to grip. The narrow part of the neck fits my hand perfectly. I recently gifted one to a friend who says the grip works great for her slightly arthritic hands.
