Organizing a Multitude of Remotes

'I want to just watch TV. Which of these do I want?' asked my dad about our assortment of remote controls when he came to visit.'

'Well,' I replied, 'this one turns on the TV and satellite and allows you to choose the channels. Oh, but first you need to use this to change the source from HDMI to TV. And these other two remotes, you don't have to deal with... unless you want to watch a DVD later...or unless Amanda and her friends were playing the Wii earlier this week.'

Like many families these days, it takes more than one gadget to work things connected to the TV. Besides the satellite or cable, we may have games, or one or more 'sticks' allowing us to cast media from another screen to the TV. There are universal remotes, of course, but even they don't always handle all of the various devices. Plus, it is one more thing to learn how to use.

Leaving my dad with the TV tuned to the channel he wanted, I realized I needed to label the remotes (and make a note of how to use them) for any family or friends who might want to use the TV when they visit.

I used a label maker to do this. Masking tape and a permanent marker would also work. You may, like I did, find remotes for devices that you no longer even own. I stuck those in a 'to be discarded' box until I checked with family members to be sure they really did not go to anything we still possess. We are now down to 'only' six remote devices in the house (we have a few TVs.) However, each is labeled, and there is no longer confusion about what goes to what. There are also now step-by-step instructions for all the different TV watching scenarios (regular TV, Netflix, DVD, etc.) in the baskets where we store the remotes.

  In Closing

'Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, allowing us to do things more quickly and efficiently. But too often it seems to make things harder, leaving us with fifty-button remote controls, digital cameras with hundreds of mysterious features and book-length manuals, and cars with dashboard systems worthy of the space shuttle.'
