Organizing Costume Jewelry
Let's talk about organizing costume jewelry. First, take out ALL of your jewelry
at one time and lay it on a table to give you a good visual of what you have.
You may be stunned at how much you've accumulated over the years.
Next, pick up each piece, one at a time. Do you love it? Do you have clothing
items that look good with it? Do you wear it often enough? These are all
questions you should be asking yourself to determine whether it's worth keeping
or if you're better off passing it on to someone else (a family member, friend,
or donation center.) If you have a huge amount, give yourself a 'getting rid of'
rule, such as the 50-50 system (50% of it stays, and the other 50% goes.)
Once you know what you're keeping, sort by color. See if there are some that are
used for the same outfits. At this point, consider selecting only your favorites
and saying goodbye to the others.
Once you're at this point, you're ready to store the costume jewelry you've
decided to keep in an organized fashion. I have a freestanding jewelry cabinet
that has an area to hang necklaces and it has drawers for the rest. I like my
jewelry stored 'out of sight.' On the other hand, my daughter has two pierced
earring organizers that hang on her wall. There are hooks for necklaces and
bracelets as well...she likes storing her jewelry 'in sight' which makes it a
form of 'artwork' in her room.
Stores sell tons of jewelry storage options...and you could also go the 'no
frills route' using hooks in your closet or even egg cartons in a
drawer...although I always suggest a system for more delicate necklaces and
bracelets so they hang nicely which prevents tangling.
I feel, if you wear costume jewelry, it makes life so much easier:
1) when you have a limited number of pieces you love and wear often enough.
Think quality over quantity.
2) when it's organized and stored in a way that you can locate what you want
quickly and easily.
