This GON Reader Planned Ahead Beautifully

Hi Maria,

I just spent some time planning ahead to make sure I got the most out of a 3 day genealogy conference. Thought I would send you an article about it in case your readers might be interested.

P.S. Best wishes...you do a great job!

Here's my article and I took both of these photos, above and below, to help illustrate:

I've just attended this fabulous 3-day conference at the London, England Excel Conference Centre.

This genealogy conference has been taking place at Salt Lake City in the US for several years, but this was the first time it came to the UK. I wanted to make the absolute most of my time at RootsTech. As well as many exhibition stands, there were over 50 different speakers every day.

My daily travel involved taking my local train into central London, a tube train and then a change to the Docklands Light Railway.

I wanted to travel as light as possible, given that everything I took I was going to have to carry, but not find I'd left essentials at home. I expected to be walking around a lot. I wanted to ensure security for my valuables both on the journey and while there, and do and see as much as possible of what RootsTech had to offer...without being so encumbered with so many belongings that it might detracte from my experience of everything RootsTech had to offer.

How did I resolve the conflict between wanting to travel light, yet make sure I had all the essentials? I planned ahead.

A few days in advance, I considered which bag I would take. I decided on a small cross-body bag for the items which I could not risk losing or wanted to have handy. I decided these were: my money (loose change plus my credit card), my keys, my travel tickets, my prescription glasses, my phone, and my RootsTech Conference Guide. I also wanted to keep a hanky and lip salve handy, and two pens in case one ran out.

This bag I never took off even when sitting down. This way I could not lose it or leave it anywhere.

In a larger shoulder bag, I took low value items: My notebook, an umbrella (English weather in October), a scarf (I chose to wear a light top in case I felt over heated but with a shawl-size, lightweight scarf in case the air conditoner kicked in too vigorously), my phone charger (although I didn't need this and left it out on subsequent days), maps (to avoid any stress caused by getting lost en route), snacks for sustenance in case there were queues at lunchtime, plus my re-usable coffee mug and water bottle (I try to be green).

I reviewed all the talks and sessions a couple of days ahead of time and determined which ones I wished to attend, so I didn't waste time whilst actually there in pouring over the schedule.

Both my bags were packed the night before to avoid a last minute scramble or items being forgotten.

I had an amazing time...caught up with some long distance friends who had also traveled to RootsTech, met family historians from all over the world, attended many interesting talks, and learned a huge amount. I had everything I needed with me and didn't lose anything. A wonderful (exhausting) few days.

Learn What Your Cat is Trying To Tell You With...

The Cat Language Bible

In it you'll learn how to finally understand
and speak with your cat

Yes, meow means something

What does it mean, you ask?

Good question. It's about the same as aloha in Hawaiian.

The meaning changes.

Context matters hugely. Is it a mean meow, or a friendly one?

What about the cat's body action? Is he facing towards you, or away? Is the tail curled, or lying flat against the floor?

Depending on these points, 'meow' could mean 'let's watch a movie together' or 'boy am I thirsty right now.'

So getting the tone and body language right is critical.

Finally, there's a quick guide on the essentials of cat communication to open your ears (and your heart) into the fascinating world of feline communication, both verbal and nonverbal.

This guide, written by a PhD animal communications expert Dr Jonas Jurgella, is the missing link that allows you to bond with your own feline friend as if he was a human child.

That's the power of true and honest communication, vs the primitive 'animal baby talk' that so many pet owners unfortunately relegate themselves to.
