Changing Our Self-Limiting Stories
'Oh no,' groaned Sally to me when I picked up her call. 'Cindy has decided to
celebrate her birthday at one of those places where you paint and have wine and
snacks. I am so bad at anything artistic. I cannot possibly paint, even if they
walk us through it.' Sally had avoided trying to do anything like that since
middle school because her art was never selected to hang on display for gallery
nights. Now, thirty years later, she still tells herself, and others, she is not
artistic.
Sally is not alone. Most of us have things we tell ourselves that are not, or
are no longer, true. We stopped examining them long ago and just continued to
let ourselves believe them. Maybe these beliefs came from something someone said
when we were children, or later on from someone whose opinion we valued. They
may come from our fears or self-doubts. But are they valid?
What do you tell yourself? Some of the most common stories we tell ourselves
include: 'I can't lose weight,' 'I am so disorganized,' 'I can't do math.' All
of these are negatives. We are much less likely to say positive things to
ourselves. Worse, we let our beliefs about ourselves become self-fulfilling
prophecies. If you think you will fail, you are much more likely to, and that
reinforces your story. How often do we say these things about ourselves to other
people, who may take us at our word? We do not do ourselves any favors when we
say these things.
So how do we deal with our self-limiting beliefs? It takes practice because
often we have done it for so long, it has become second nature. But these
beliefs can be turned around.
The first step is awareness. Stop for a few minutes, get quiet, and consider the
stories you tell yourself. Using a journal may help. How many beliefs begin with
the words, 'I can't'? Do you have any idea why you think this way? Maybe
algebra made no sense to you in school, but does that mean basic math is beyond
your ability? Do you tell yourself that you hate exercise? If you are
remembering sit-ups, pushups, and jumping jacks in school, that may be
understandable. But maybe you just have not found the right exercise for
yourself at this point in your life. Could you be using your negative self-talk
as an excuse?
Take each of the limiting beliefs and reframe them. If you tell yourself you
cannot get organized, how can you change the story? Think back to a time you did
organize something, maybe a cross country move, maybe your recipes. You did it
then. Now, find something to organize, perhaps a kitchen drawer, and do it. Pat
yourself on the back. Organize something else, pat yourself on the back again.
Realize you are perfectly capable of being organized. You just needed a little
practice. Start small and move on to bigger organizing tasks.
You can do this with nearly every self-limiting belief in your life. Some are
harder than others, and you may need some help from another quarter (a coach, a
counselor, a professional organizer, etc., depending on the situation). But you
can do it. Stop disparaging yourself to yourself, reframe the belief, and take
on the challenge.
This is not to say you have to continue doing something you hate, but don't
allow limiting beliefs to stop you from doing something you're convinced you
can't. There's a good chance you can do something with a little bit of
motivation and practice. There's an excellent chance you can do something with
adjustments, if there is a health challenge. There are people in wheelchairs
playing basketball. There are people with no arm function who paint with their
toes.
By the way, with a bit of coaxing, Sally DID indeed go to Paint Night. Although
her art won't make it to The Lourve, and maybe wasn't as good as some of her
other friends in her mind, she DID it. She told me she was happy that she
didn't stay home, that she got out of her box, and that she gave herself the
opportunity to enjoy a nice night out with friends.

No matter what your dog's problem behavior is, be it jumping, peeing
inappropriately, aggression, pulling on the leash...or whatever, there is ONE
SOLUTION that can help STOP this problem now.
The sad fact is, most dog trainers miss this solution entirely. They give you
cookie cutting training programs. They use outdated and `mean' dominance
techniques. Or worse yet, they have no qualifications and are complete phonies.
So what's the answer to stopping your dog's behavior problems? In 5 simple
words...
Discovering your dog's hidden intelligence.
Let me explain. More intelligent dogs are better behaved. A more intelligent dog
takes commands easier and understands what you need from them. The good news is,
no matter how clever you think your dog is, you can unlock their hidden
intelligence quickly and easily.
Don't waste a second longer coping with problem behaviors you don't need to be
dealing with. Visit this link to learn more about Brain Training for Dogs:

'Never say that you can't do something, or that something seems impossible, or
that something can't be done, no matter how discouraging or harrowing it may be;
human beings are limited only by what we allow ourselves to be limited by: our
own minds. We are each the masters of our own reality; when we become self-aware
to this: absolutely anything in the world is possible.' Master yourself, and
become king of the world around you. Let no odds, chastisement, exile, doubt,
fear, or ANY mental virii prevent you from accomplishing your dreams. Never be a
victim of life; be its conqueror.'
