A Season of ThanksGIVING
Thanksgiving can be read in different ways, most commonly as a time for giving
thanks for that which we have been given. But what if we emphasized the words
THANKS and GIVING? What would we do? What would we say? What would or could we
give...and to who?
We could begin by thanking people whose work we often take for granted. Look
clerks, cashiers, and medical techs in the eye, and say a sincere thank you when
they help you. So often, we barely notice them, and everyone likes to feel
appreciated.
Leave a thank you note and/or gift for your postal carrier, but be sure you stay
within the gift-giving parameters they have to follow. You can give a gift
valued at $20 or less, but it cannot be cash, a check, of a gift card. So, that
being said, here are some gift ideas to thank your mail carrier: fuzzy socks,
chocolate, tea, coffee, lip balm, gloves, a mug, a Christmas ornament, a scarf,
a keychain, or a journal.
We can give our time. So many agencies need volunteers. Schools need people to
read with their students or act as mentors. Food pantries need people to help.
Libraries can nearly always use volunteers to help re-shelve books and do
displays. Churches need volunteers to help with kids or with being Sunday
morning greeters.
We can take the time to help a neighbor weed or spread mulch...or snow plow
their driveway (depending on where you live.) Maybe you have a particular
interest, like history or photography you could put to good use volunteering at
a museum or gallery. Perhaps you have skills you could teach to others,
especially job skills. Animal lovers will be welcome volunteers at shelters.
VolunteerMatch.org may help in finding volunteer opportunities that appeal to
you.
Do you belong to a choral group that might visit nursing homes to entertain the
residents? If you feel comfortable with it, and the facility allows it, could
you volunteer to visit the residents, especially those who do not get visits
from family or friends?
Most of us donate things or money to charity or other causes. Place a box or
shopping bag in a closet near a door and have family members place things they
wish to give in it. Whenever the box approaches full, make a trip to the
donation drop-off. Thanksgiving and Christmas often provide extra opportunities
for giving, perhaps by 'adopting' a family or child anonymously through an
agency and providing for them. Consider sending a 'care package' to a soldier
overseas.
Participate in a 'Turkey Trot' or similar walk or run to raise funds for
charitable causes. Your family may wish to join in with you.
Hospitals are so often in need of blood. If you can, this would be an excellent
place to donate.
Maybe getting out and doing something away from your home is not possible. There
are other ways to give. Donate to the hungry via feedingamerica.org. Help
impoverished people through associations like kiva.org or heifer.org. If your
family has older children and adults who are difficult to buy for, consider a
gift in their name to a cause they support. There is less 'stuff' for folks to
have to deal with and does good as well.
Finally, remember to give thanks for the mere fact that we can give. What is on
your THANKS and GIVING list?

A Week of Thanksgiving Inspiration...
'The funny thing about Thanksgiving, or any big meal, is that you spend 12 hours
shopping for it, then go home and cook, chop, braise and blanch. Then it's gone
in 20 minutes and everybody lies around sort of in a sugar coma and then it
takes 4 hours to clean it up.' --Ted Allen
