Cleaning the Shower and Transforming a Baby Room
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
I am an avid reader of yours and I would like to ask you two things: first how
to clean a very dirty glass shower cabin. I have used a lot of products, but
nothing seems to really clean. Any ideas? Second I would like to transform a
room into a baby's room this year. I want it to be neutral and like the rest of
the house, modern and Zen style. I don't like baby rooms with baby decorations. I
want it more stylish. Many thanks!

Maria Gracia responds...
Hi Lia,
I'm happy to address both of your great questions...here goes:
SHOWER
Glass shower walls and doors can be challenging to get and keep clean. If you
have hard water, cleaning becomes more difficult.
Start with the gentlest treatments, the ones least likely to make things any
worse. My personal favorite is a fifty-fifty mix of white vinegar and water,
with one or two drops of dish soap added. Spray on the surfaces and let it sit
for five or ten minutes, then wipe with a microfiber cloth, using serious elbow
grease. Do both inside and outside. You may have to repeat the treatment more
than once. If you feel the need for further treatment, spray with window
cleaner. Again, wipe with a microfiber cloth, ending with polishing with a dry
microfiber cloth. If the fifty-fifty mix did not come close to the results you
wanted, try straight vinegar. Some people make a paste of vinegar and baking
soda and let it sit on their glass showers for a few minutes before washing and
drying with a microfiber cloth.
Avoid abrasive cleaners and sponges as you may scratch or etch the glass. (Is it
possible that the previous owner may have damaged the shower glass, by the way?
If so, it may need to be replaced.)
If you search using Google, you will find lots of suggestions, including toilet
bowl cleaner and hard water dissolvers. I would be cautious. Some things may
damage the glass, and moreover, if they drip on your shower floor, tub, or
fixtures, they may damage the finish. Even vinegar should be used with care
around some surfaces. Be sure to have adequate ventilation.
Once the shower is clean, it is best to try to keep it that way. Probably the
ideal method is having everyone use a squeegee on the glass right after their
shower. There are also sprays you apply right after showering that help. Or you
could wipe with a dry microfiber cloth after each shower.
I would also clean with one of the deeper cleaning methods I mentioned above
once a week. I know...this is no fun. But if you do, eventually you may be
able to restore it to a much better state, so long as it's not permanently
damaged.
BABY ROOM
I love your idea of a neutral, Zen nursery. It sounds like a serene and calming
environment for a baby. I would go with quiet colors or natural wood with one or
two soft colors for an accent. No deep, dark colors. Perhaps a simple mural on a
wall for pattern and interest. Include a soft rug to help you enter and exit
quietly. Natural lighting is great, but be sure to be able to block out light
when it is sleep time. Soft lighting, or lighting you can dim, would be ideal
for other times, especially during the night.
Don't forget to include ways to store toys, diapers, and other baby things so
that they do not distract from the tranquil feel you are seeking. Perhaps add
some natural sounds, like flowing water, ocean waves, or some other soothing
white noise. You can probably find some good inspiration on sites like Pinterest
or Houzz.
Best wishes,
--Maria
