Post-Thanksgiving Organizing
The day after Thanksgiving can be nearly as busy as the day itself sometimes and
may involve planning of its own to make it go smoothly. What do you want to
accomplish on the day after Thanksgiving?
For many people, it involves Black Friday shopping. If this is something you
enjoy, do a little prep ahead of time, so you know if a price is good. Plan your
route. Start at the place that opens earliest or has the item you want most. Try
not to have to backtrack between stores.
Other people now go into full-fledged Christmas mode. The decorations come out,
the tree is put up, and lights get strung outside. While some family members,
notably children, are eager to get going with the Christmas decorations, take
some time first to gather together fall decor and put it away. Wash and put away
Thanksgiving linens and the good china and silver. Doing this gives you a 'clean
slate' for putting up the next holiday's decor.
Part of my day after Thanksgiving organization involves note-making. What went
well this year, what did not? What would I do or not do again?
Notes about the menu, everything I served, whether or not the dish was a winner
or not, gets recorded. Maybe everyone liked the cute, turkey-shaped cheese ball,
but politely did not mention (or eat much of) the new raw cranberry sauce
recipe. For a recipe I would like to do again, I take care to note and make a
copy of it.
I make a note of what decorations I displayed, especially if I was pleased with
them, or if they were not worth the effort. I take pictures of them (usually
before the big day) too, to help me remember next year. This makes decorating
the house so much easier.
Other miscellaneous notes are jotted down. Who should not be seated next to each
other next year? Or, next time, 'buy extra club soda in case of red wine spills.'
All of my notes then go into a subfolder on my computer labeled Thanksgiving,
which is in another folder marked Holidays. (Of course, you can use a notebook
and pen if you prefer.) Before each holiday, I check my notes to help me plan
for it. Having recipes, decor plans, and a pre-holiday TO DO list...all in
one place...makes a holiday much more manageable.
