Classic Housekeeping Hints

Maria,

In response to your When You Think of Clean and Your Home, What Comes to Mind? newsletter issue...

You're probably not old enough to remember Peg Bracken and her books, 'The I Hate to Cook Book' and 'The I Hate to Housekeep Book,' but this newsletter reminded me of her and made me smile.

The main thing I remember from her housekeeping hints is that if you have only the minute it will take surprise company to come up the front walk, you should clean the handle of your refrigerator. She said a clean handle promotes the illusion that the refrigerator itself is indeed clean and makes the whole kitchen look better.

If I remember correctly, if you had more than one minute, you should tackle the most visible mirror in your house.

I enjoy your newsletters thoroughly--thank you!

Essential Oils, Pets and Children

Maria,

In response to your December 1st Maria Likes Newsletter Issue

I always enjoy your articles and get great hints. Regarding your diffuser hint, some essentials oils are too strong for children and pets. I've seen articles lately about certain diffused oils being harmful to pets. I just know you wouldn't want anything bad to happen to your subscribers or their beloved pets.

Response from Maria Gracia:

Diana,

Thanks so much for your note. I immediately looked into this with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC). Here's what I learned:

1. You do not want to keep essentials oils anywhere that a pet (or child) can knock them over and either ingest or get the oil on his or her body. Never apply essential oils to your pet.

2. Forego essential oils if a) your pet (child) has a breathing problem, or b) your pet is a bird. Birds have very delicate respiratory systems.

3. To help ensure safety, keep your essential oils in a room that your pet (child) does not access, and keep those oils out of the reach of pets or children.

Is the Latest Home Trend Harmful to Your Pets?

Thanks again for your note...safety first, always!

'Kitchens were different then, too - not only what came out of them, but their smells and sounds. A hot pie cooling smells different from a frozen pie thawing.'
