  GON Readers Respond

One Chore I Wish Would Get Done On Its Own

I recently asked my Get Organized Now! readers, 'If there was one chore you wish would just get done on its own, with no work on your part, what would you want it to be?' This generated a whole bunch of responses. Keep reading.

By the way, I try to keep my newsletters to 5 minutes or less...but there were so many great reader responses that I wanted to include lots of them. So, I promise I'll make up for it with a much shorter edition tomorrow. Here goes...

Vacuuming!! (Sara in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada)

I wish the housecleaning could be done by magic, with no effort from our side. By housecleaning, I mean, every nook and corner of the house. Thanks for your newsletter. (Anjali, Bangalore, India)

Dusting! (Noel Veale)

The one chore I wish would just get done on its own is...everything involved after going to the supermarket (where you have to queue up, put items on the conveyor belt, pack goods into bags, then to the car, then home, then carry bags into the house, and then have to unpack and put away). It would be nice not to have to then take out the groceries and put them away. If I could wave a magic wand, I would, in order for the shopping to be put away of its own accord! Even if you order online, which I do not for food shopping, you still have to put items away! Love and light! (Anna, United Kingdom)

Keeping software up to date and synchronized across devices and platforms. (Jean, Victoria, BC, Canada)

The one job that I wish would do itself is dishes! I don't have a dishwasher so I must do them by hand. A simple job, but I really dislike washing dishes! (Linda, Herington, Kansas, USA)

The one chore I'd like to have done without any doing on my part is weeding the gardens and keeping those weeds from reappearing in a few days. Love your daily email, always keeps me organized day by day. (Karen Fellenstein)

I wish I never had to file. I'm usually in a hurry, even though I'm retired. I have a box in which all papers go in that need to be filed. It gets sorted once or twice a year. In fact, my computer filing system is just as bad. I think of a document to find and can't think what I would have filed it under. Filing just has never been appealing to me. I've always said I'd much rather teach than be a secretary. (Connie, Hemlock, MI, USA)

Dusting. (Carole, Indiana (temp for hip replacement, then Florida), USA)

The chore I wish would get done on its own is definitely dusting!!! Happy Holidays! (Jeannie Cerny)

Cleaning the bathrooms! I have four of them, plus two sons and a husband! I'd love it if the bathrooms cleaned themselves. (Donna, Hopkinton, MA, USA)

LOL...I'd be happy with light bulbs that changed themselves! I find the longer lasting LEDs blinding...they're too bright! (Mel, Denville, NJ USA)

LAUNDRY! (Sandi, Fort Lee, NJ, USA)

DUSTING! Oh, how I really detest dusting! LOL. I'm sure it wouldn't be so bad if I could just minimize some of the items on the tops of all the tables and dressers and book shelves! Thanks for asking! Make it a great day! (Brenda, Somers, NY, USA)

Dishes! I hate doing dishes, even putting them in the dishwasher and unloading them. I LOVE doing laundry for some reason, but dishes...I could do without. My husband is retiring from teaching this spring and I already told him he was getting the job of handling the dishes each day! (Cathy Otto, Bruning, NE)

Washing up dishes, but unfortunately my kitchen is too small for a dishwasher! (Gary Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom)

I wish all the windows in my house would magically clean themselves. It's such a time-consuming and labor-intensive task, and even after my husband and I have washed them all, when the sun comes out, they are often not the sparking clean windows we had hoped to get from all our efforts. Where DO all those streaks come from?! (Norma Cary, NC, USA)

Hi Maria, I wish I could just blink after I get out of bed in the morning and arrive at my desk (or first project at home) exercised, showered, make-up-ed, dressed and fed. The process of all that sometimes just wears me out! Thanks. (Shari)

My one (?) chore I wish was automatically done is housework. (Kathy in Lawton, OK, USA)

The chores that I wish would do themselves are: Vacuuming and putting away the clean dishes out of the dishwasher. (Virginia L Maas)

Hi Maria, The one chore I wish would get done on its own with no input from me would be to completely organize my 'hoarding' house! (Dottie, So Windsor, CT, USA)

Maria, The one chore I would choose to get done on its own is brushing my dog . I own a german shepherd and the amount of dog hair I clean up on a daily basis can be overwhelming. If she was already brushed all the time, that would cut down on other jobs as well, such as how often I need to vacuum and sweep or having to lint roll my clothes before I leave the house. Love your daily emails! (Sherah)

I hate cleaning bathrooms. Wish it could get done on its own. (Sue, Philadelphia, PA, USA)

A self-cleaning bathroom would be a dream come true. (Gretchen, Streator, IL, USA)

I certainly enjoy your newsletters. The one chore that I wish would take care of itself is the bathroom. I have never enjoyed cleaning any part of the bathroom! I enjoy the results, but the making of these results are nothing but hard work and very, very time consuming. When you reach the wonderful age of 70, home chores should take care of themselves!! (Margaret Buzzard Laurel, MD, USA)

The one chore I wish would get done on its own, without any help from me, is getting the floors swept and mopped. None of the other chores take as long or seem to require as much effort as sweeping and mopping. Also the other chores seem to give more 'bang for the buck' in that the house actually looks better when they're done, but the fact the floors were cleaned is not nearly so obvious. And none of the other chores hurt my back like sweeping and mopping do. It's definitely necessary because it's obvious when it's not done, but there's very little 'reward' for the amount of work required. I have to say that I'm very thankful I have the vinyl-wood-look flooring now. I used to have carpet and never could get it reasonably clean. Sweeping and mopping, as troublesome as it is, is far better than vacuuming and cleaning carpets. God willing, I will never have carpet again! The wood-look flooring is pretty and the spills don't soak into it. Yeah! (Louise Deluca)

I enjoy your newsletter...thank you so much! If I could have a chore that would do itself without my help, it would certainly be keeping my wood floors swept and mopped. It will be fun to see others' responses! (Vicki Springfield, MO, USA)

My one chore that I do not like doing is cleaning the house! (Oops, is that too big a chore???) I am very organized. You can check all my cupboards, closets and drawers and everything is neat and tidy and I could tell you where to find anything, but I do not like cleaning. It wouldn't be too difficult since I am a minimalist, but I will make any excuse not to do it. It only gets done if I have company coming, so please don't drop in unexpectedly (I won't answer!!). I have a two-story house and it just takes too long. I know I can do it in bits and pieces, but I am also an all or nothing gal! (Eileen from Ontario, Canada)

Hello, Maria! Hands down, the one cleaning chore that I wish would magically get done without any effort from me is the BATHROOM!!! Thanks for all your wonderful tips, ideas and quotes! I look forward to all your newsletters. Merry Christmas! (Victoria, Arlington, TX, USA)

Chore: cleaning the bathrooms! (Linda, Portland, OR, USA)

I wish that dusting would be done with no effort on my part. It seems so futile. (Karen T. Richmond, TX, USA)
