____ 1. Indoor shoes near the door. Floors and carpets stay a lot cleaner
if everyone removes their shoes when they come inside. Not only do we bring dirt
in from outside, but we also bring in a ton of germs. Kids and pets are
often/usually on the floor and subject to whatever bacteria are there. In our
family, we all have a pair of shoes near the door where we usually come in. For
us, it is the door from the garage, and the shoes are neatly lined up under a
bench inside the door. If you have frequent visitors, you might keep a bin with
slippers for them to change into.
____ 2. A decluttered junk drawer. Junk drawers are, by nature, somewhat
messy. After all, they are the places we stick the rubber bands, extra keys,
twist ties, extra pens, flashlight (which might need fresh batteries), tape
measure, and the business cards we picked up at the annual Home Show. But, by
and by, they tend to get out of control. Rule of thumb: when you grit your teeth
upon opening the drawer, it's time to declutter. Small dividers keep like-items
together. Dispose of dead batteries. Get rid of 'excess' or 'unknown' doo-dads.
(How many twist ties do you really need?) Before you know it, order will be
created from chaos.
____ 3. Fingerless gloves. Until I had a pair of these, I did not get the
point of them. After all, you wear gloves to keep your hands warm, right?
However, if you need to answer your phone, pull a credit card from your wallet,
or use any other touch screen, it is usually necessary to take one off. I was
gifted a pair recently, and they are a game-changer. My hands stay warm, and I
can still answer my phone, get out a credit card, etc. If you live where you
sometimes need gloves, this might be the year to try a pair. Here's the pair I
just got from one of my friends:
