A few days ago, I received a voicemail from We-Energies, our home's gas and electric supplier, indicating that if we didn't pay our bill that day, which they indicated was past due, they were going to turn off our electricity that night. Bewildered by this, I checked my last payment...it was paid. I then went on their web site to double check. Paid...and next bill not due for a week.

So, I called We-Energies (the number on the bill...NOT the number on the voicemail) and the rep confirmed that the voicemail was a scam...trying to get me to 'pay a bill' by supplying the scammers with my credit card or bank account. I thought I'd mention this to my GON readers in case any of you get the same, or a similar, call.

I also posted this message on my personal Facebook page and here were just two of the dozens of comments that caught my eye...

'It happened to us with someone claiming to work at Netflix.'

'I got a voicemail from Dean Health saying I needed to call a certain number to hear important information about my account. I called Dean directly (not the voicemail number). It was a scam. I also got a very convincing email from Spectrum (Internet service) that there had been unusual activity on my account. They said my account was suspended. That was a scam too.'

Bottom line, when you get a phone call, email, text, or letter from anyone asking you to call them immediately to confirm your account, to pay your bill, threatening to turn off your electricity, etc., never call the number they give you. If there is any question in your mind that the contact may be legitimate, find the number of the company in question (your last bill or by looking up their web site) and contact them directly.

There are tons of scams going around. Don't fall victim to them.
