Preparing for a Fresh Start in the New Year Ahead
As the year is drawing to an end, now is a good time to prepare for a fresh
start in the upcoming year. Many of us will make new year's resolutions to lose
weight, exercise more, or eat better. Those are definitely great things to shoot
for, but I think a great way to start out fresh is to lighten our load.
Think back on the past year. Make a quick estimate of how many new things that
you have purchased over the course of the year and brought into your home. I am
not talking about things that you buy and immediately use and are done with,
such as food or shampoo, but more like the things that are still floating around
your home. This could include clothing, linens, shoes, or anything that you have
purchased for your home. How many things do you think you have purchased? 10?
50? 100? Considerably more than that?
Now think about how many things you have eliminated from your home. This could
be things that you have tossed out, donated, or removed from your home by any
other means. For most people, the amount coming in is way greater than the
amount going out. This is the manner in which clutter creeps up on us and
eventually takes over. It is really basic math. Bringing in 50 things and only
taking out 10, over the course of time, will eventually result in a cluttered
home and a disorganized life.
The time is now to give yourself a fresh start. First of all, begin by starting
a donation box. Clothes that are hanging in your closet, but never get worn, can
be an easy category of items to begin weeding out. Get out of the 'I might wear
this again' mindset and purge anything that is eating up closet space that you
never really wear. Things that look cute on the hanger, but less than flattering
on, can be eliminated without a second thought.
Next, go room-to-room and look for items that you no longer have a use for.
Excess coffee mugs, knick knacks, or any other household items that are
collecting dust and never really getting used can also be placed in your
donation box. Every inch of counter space or mantle space does NOT need to have
something on it. Clearing items from these areas can make a room appear less
cluttered.
Finally, implement a new policy: Every time you bring a new item into your home,
whether it is a new clothing item, home decor, or whatever it may be...add at
least one other item to your donation box. Doing so will help ensure that you
don't get overloaded in clutter all over again. If you are really motivated to
downsize, consider implementing the 'one in, two out' policy. If you are in the
mall and are tempted to buy that new sweater, tell yourself that once you get it
home you will donate not one but TWO items in its place. Not only will this help
you to keep your closet in control but, at the same time, will make you really
think before purchasing anything new and can stop you from making impulse buys
for things that you may not really need.
