'A Christmas Carol' Message
For the past few weeks, I've been reading Mr.
Dickens and His Carol: A Novel by Samantha Silva. It's a tale about Charles
Dickens and how he came about writing his legendary book, 'A Christmas Carol.'
This fiction AND non-fiction blend has been a delightful companion to help me
relax and give me some mini-vacations this holiday season. Because of this book,
I've been fascinated to learn more about Charles Dickens. In fact, that is one
of my personal 'fun goals' for the new year ahead.
Most folks have seen the movie, 'A Christmas Carol.' The original reaches way
back to December 16, 1938...and there have been tons of remakes ever since. You
likely know the story...Scrooge is unkind to the folks who work for him, he's
not charitable in the least, and he's the perfect mixture of cranky and rude.
Scrooge goes home after work one night, falls asleep, and is visited by three
ghosts throughout the evening...Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas
Future. These ghosts take Scrooge on a journey through his past and present, and
give him a vision of his death as well.
Scrooge is eventually terrified (and inspired) enough to see the error of his
ways...and when he wakes up on Christmas morning, he is full of joy, excitement,
and ready to spread a whole bunch of love.
I enjoy watching holiday movies in general, but this particular one (along with
'It's a Wonderful life,' which incidentally holds so many similarities to 'A
Christmas Carol'), contains a whole bunch of excellent messages that are perfect
to ponder at year-end. I'd like to focus today on these three:
1) 'Letting people in' is important. While most of us won't have three
helpful ghosts visiting us on Christmas Eve, there is a whole world of people
available (family members, friends, authors, mentors, business associates,
neighbors, medical professionals, etc. etc.) to provide education, inspiration,
help, and guidance to us as needed. In my eyes, life is a huge brainstorming
session and a land of helpful minds, hearts, and hands...if we simply let people
in.
2) Before dismissing someone... The other day, I was in the library ready
to check out a book and the person ahead of me was being impolite to the
librarian because of frustration he was having with the computer system. The
patron left exasperated...and, by the time it was my turn to check out with the
librarian, she was pretty cranky as well. Thankfully, it was the end of the day
and hopefully they both got a good rest that evening. That all being said, who
knows what was going on with the library patron AND with the librarian that day.
It could have been a bad day for one or both of them. It could have been a bad
week...or a bad year for one or both of them. Everyone has burdens they carry,
some that affect them very deeply. While it's very easy to dismiss someone as
simply being a rude person, sometimes it's their inner pain that just comes
pouring out of them now and then. This is why it's so important to always strive
to be kind. You just never know when someone is going to go a bit, or a lot,
over the edge.
3) Giving ourselves a 'reboot' may be exactly what we need. We normally
think of a reboot in association with our computers. Sometimes, our computers
get frazzled, overwhelmed, and may even go a little bonkers. The quickest fix is
often to simply reboot them. Same with our lives. Every single day (including
today) offers us the chance to reboot and start fresh. We may have to begin the
new day with the same challenges as yesterday, BUT we don't have to start with
yesterday's approach...especially if that approach was one that wasn't
productive. I know...this is sometimes easier said than done...but we only have
one life to live, and we might as well strive to live each day in the best way
we can. Knowing when we need a reboot, is often the first step to making our
tomorrows better.
In closing, I love this particular quote from 'A Christmas Carol':
'His own heart laughed: and that was quite enough for him.' (Charles Dickens)
I hope your heart remembers yesterday's happy moments with fondness, enjoys the
peacefulness and meaning of today (Christmas Day), and is filled with
anticipation and hope for wonderful possibilities in the days to follow.
