The Anti-Resolution List

Most of us make resolutions every new year, all those things we are going to do, lose weight, get organized, join a gym, eat healthy, and so on. But have you ever considered making an Anti-Resolution list for those things NOT TO DO in the New Year? Here are ten ideas to get you started.

1. I will not indulge in extended self-criticism. OK, you ate the brownie or the fries that were not on your new diet. Or you missed a week at the gym. Neither of these is a life-wrecking goof. Acknowledge them, go back to your diet or the gym, and let it go. Don't keep running yourself down.

2. I will not say yes when I want to say no. It's OK to say no if you don't want to be on that committee, if you do not want to go to lunch with that person, even if you do not want to read this month's book club selection. Make whatever excuse you have to, and use your time for better things.

3. I will not worry so much, especially about the little things. Most things we worry about are the things we have no control over anyway. When you catch yourself agonizing over things you cannot control, tell yourself to stop. Then conscientiously think of something else, even if all you can do is recite multiplication tables to take your mind elsewhere.

4. I will not let other people try to tell me how I should think. I am an adult and entitled to my opinions, whether someone else likes them or not.

5. I will stop putting everyone's needs ahead of my own. I will help other people, but I will take care of myself as well, making time for myself and my needs too.

6. I will stop comparing myself to others. Constant comparison to what someone has or how well they do something often just makes me feel bad. I don't need that. I have many other talents and gifts of my own. I do not need to compare and envy.

7. I will stop complaining. And I will start doing what I can to make what I am complaining about better. While this will not work with the weather, many things about which we complain are things we really can change.

8. I will not live in the past. All of us have regrets and hurts, things we wish we had done or said. The thing is, these things are behind us now. We cannot go back and change them. Let them go, acknowledge that things did not go as you had hoped or planned, but tomorrow is a new day with infinite new possibilities.

9. I will give up caring what everyone else thinks of me (or what I think they think of me.) This totally wastes my energy, and I cannot please everyone anyway.

10. I will give up New Year's Resolutions that set me up for failure. I will not swear to lose 50 pounds by April and become a vegan. What I can promise is to set reasonable goals, like losing five pounds and eating healthier most of the time. If I slip up, I am not a lesser person. I will realistically work toward my goals.
