Avoiding the Winter Blues

Now that the holiday season has come and gone, many people are left with something called SAD...Seasonal Affective Disorder. In layman's terms...the 'winter blues.'

While I'm a pretty positive person, I'll admit that I'm not a fan of super-cold weather, slippery roads, snow...and the 'uncomfortable, extra-energy-required, often dangerous conditions' they cause. These, along with the lack of sunshine, can make even the happiest person a bit blue...and maybe even momentarily grumpy.

Now, if you have a seriously bad case of SAD and you are feeling downright depressed, see your doctor for sure. But if you're simply feeling you could use a bit of a pick-me-up, these can help you minimize, or even completely avoid, those winter blues...

Exercise

This may not be what you want to hear, but exercise is key in helping to avoid the winter blues. Although getting up and moving around may not sound appealing on a cold winter's day when you'd much rather lie on the couch under a warm blanket, it truly is beneficial. Exercising releases endorphins in the brain that help to improve mood and the feeling of well-being. This doesn't mean that you have to hit the gym for an hour if that is not what you normally do. But getting up and doing something to get your heart pumping can be extremely beneficial. For instance, you might bundle up and try a brisk fifteen-minute walk. It can have the same benefits as a longer workout in helping to keep the winter blues at bay. Too cold outside to walk? Head to a big department store or mall and walk inside. (You don't have to buy anything, by the way. You don't want your winter blues to end up in clutter.) Getting up and moving can help you also burn those extra calories that can add up during the winter months when most folks tend to be less active...an added bonus for doing something active.

Increase your vitamin d

Adequate intake of vitamin d is crucial in helping to maintain energy levels and mood. The problem is that the human body only produces vitamin d in response to ultraviolet rays. In the winter months, we tend to spend fewer hours outside. In order for the body to produce ample amounts of vitamin d, we need moderate, daily sun exposure. In the winter months, this can be much easier said than done. Vitamin d deficiency can play a key role in having the winter blues creep in. Foods such as salmon, eggs, tuna, and milk contain good amounts of this vitamin and can help to get your vitamin levels back to where they should be. You may even want to consider (check with your doctor first) adding a vitamin d supplement to your daily routine in the months of the year when your sun exposure is so limited.

Try a light box

If you feel your mood is not where you feel it should be for more than a few days at a time, you may want to consider investing in a light box. Light therapy lamps are designed to mimic natural sunlight and can prove beneficial when trying to deal with seasonal depression. Sitting under one of these lamps for even a few minutes a day has been shown to increase mood and energy and can help to give you that added mood boost that you need during the winter months.

Get rid of clutter

One thing that can really give you a boost of inspiration, when you're feeling blue, is setting a goal and accomplishing it. Getting rid of clutter is a wonderful goal for the beginning of the year, because you're setting the stage for the months to follow. Choose small projects that you can get done in 10-15 minutes, like organizing your sock drawer, re-organizing your spices, or deleting a batch of email clutter. Besides, doing a project (any project), provides a lovely distraction from the blues.
