Do You Have Tips for Organizing to Move and Downsize?

A GON Reader Asks

Dear Maria,

Do you have any tips for organizing in order to get ready to move and downsize? My husband and I are anticipating moving when he retires in two years and we are trying to get a head start on things. We'll be going from a 3,500 square foot house to approximately 2,000 square feet. So far, we've trimmed down our master closet, but in other areas, we just seem to move things from one area to another. Thanks for your help.

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Sue,

It's absolutely wonderful that you're asking this question now...2 years early. You have a ton of time and the opportunity to make this move without taking anything you don't truly need.

My first suggestion may seem a bit 'extreme,' but I know it works very well. Excluding furniture, you might begin boxing up categories of items now. Be sure the boxes are clearly labeled. Then, when you actually need something, fish it out of the box and you can keep that item readily accessible. These are the only items you should take, because clearly, they're the ones you're actually using right now. Anything still in boxes over the next year are good candidates for donation.

If this is just too much for you, try this. Each month, focus on ONE room or 'subject.' Month one, may be the master bedroom, month two may be the kitchen, and month three may be the boxes of paperwork in your basement or home office. Try filling up as many bags and boxes as you can...either for a local charity, or the trash, depending on what you come up with. At the end of the first year, you'll have a lot less items to deal with.

I'm not sure how long you've lived in your current home, but it's amazing how much stuff we all tend to accumulate every year that we live somewhere. You beginning to tackle this now is a BIG step in the right direction.

Please keep me posted on your progress as the year progresses!
