These Make Your Home Look Disorganized and/or Dirty
The other day, I walked into the guest bathroom and noticed a huge smudge across
the mirror. The previous night, my teen daughter and her friend were applying
charcoal face masks in there. I'm sure they splashed the mirror, and then
quick-wiped it with a towel. They actually cleaned up whatever other mess they
may have made because the rest of the bathroom looked very clean, but that big
smudge automatically gave it an unkempt look. Windex to the rescue and two
minutes later, it looked lovely again. It is amazing how one little fix could
make such a big difference.
This got me thinking about other similar instances that, when ignored, could
make one's home look disorganized or dirty...and how rectifying those issues
can quickly result in a more organized, cleaner look.
1) Faucets with water spots, toothpaste, or other smudges or grime on them.
Wipe off and shine the various faucets in your home for a quick
fix...kitchen sink, bathroom sinks, bathtub faucets, etc. You may be amazed at
how simply shining up your faucets can make these rooms look so much cleaner.
2) Squished pillows tossed haphazardly on sofas and beds. When you lean
back on a sofa pillow, it's going to get squished and maybe even dug into one of
the couch cushions. When you're done using it, fluff it in your hands to get it
back in shape, and then place it nicely on the sofa, arranged with the other
throw pillows if applicable. The same goes for bed pillows. After you get up in
the morning and they're aired out a bit, fluff them, straighten out the pillow
cases, and place them nicely on the bed for later.
3) Unmade beds. Speaking of pillows, let's chat about unmade beds. I know... I
know...you're going to just sleep in it again later. But there is something very
special about turning down the sheets on a beautifully made bed, rather than
slipping into a mess of disheveled sheets and blankets. Plus, unmade beds make a
room look completely disorganized...beds are the focal points of bedrooms. When
you get up in the morning, allow your bed to air out a bit while you're getting
ready for the day...and then make your bed. If it takes too long to make your
bed, it may be time to simplify your bed coverings.
4) Surface clutter. No matter what surface it is...the kitchen counter, a
home office desk, the bathroom counter, the coffee table...if there are some (or
many) stray items on them, it's not going to make the room look organized and
presentable. Put stray items back in their homes. If they don't have homes,
designate these places.
5) Filled trash containers. Kitchen trash containers filled to the top
are often accompanied with an odor. So even if your home looks fairly clean, the
smell coming from the trash may be hinting otherwise. Don't wait so long to get
rid of your trash. Put filled bags in a larger trash receptacle in your garage
(or outside) until trash day. The same goes for bathroom trash containers. Don't
wait until they're overflowing to empty them out.
