It Couldn't Add Up to That Much, Could It?

I was having coffee with a client of mine two weeks ago and we were talking about money. She commented that, although she was doing okay financially, she still had to wonder where all of her money went. Bills were getting paid and she wasn't behind on payments or anything, but she still felt like there should be more money left at the end of the month than she was currently ending up with.

Do you know exactly how much money you spend in a week on things that you don't give a second thought to? We all have our list of monthly bills that we have to pay, but how much money do we drop on things that really aren't necessities?

I recommended to her to track her spending, for one solid week. When she purchased something, she was to write it down in a notepad, which I recommended she store in her car on the passenger seat...so she could record the expense before leaving her parking spot.

To this, she commented that she was guilty of making some impulse buys during the course of a week, but she felt it couldn't add up to that much, now could it??

I just met with her again to find out how she did on purchases not related to regular monthly bills.

Day number one (Sunday) was the day she stopped for gas. Although gas is a necessary spending item, the coffee, $10 in lottery tickets, and pack of gum she ended up with probably were not. Still, it didn't add up to much. Not a big deal, right?

She then showed me her spending for the remainder of the week:

Monday
--fun placemats at Dollar Store
--new eBook for eReader
--groceries (we estimated about $27 worth of 'junk food' on her receipt which was all we counted)

Tuesday
--two coffees and two egg sandwiches (lunch out with her hubby)
--$20 given to her daughter for the movies

Wednesday
--fancy shampoo and conditioner offered to her when she went for her haircut

Thursday
--no purchases

Friday
--fast food stop for lunch
--pizza for dinner for her family of 4

Saturday
--gas station snacks for kids before swim meet

Grand total: $139

Although none of these purchases, individually, added up to a ton of money, when we added them all together, she was quite surprised at how much extra spending she had done that week.

Then I multiplied that amount by 4 weeks to project what she may end up spending at the end of that month...potentially $556. That's quite a bit of money for luxury items. This floored her.

If you ever wonder where all of YOUR money is going (beyond your monthly bills), I challenge you to give this a try. You may be able to make some cuts in your spending by simply being more aware of the 'little things' that you are buying, because sometimes those little things, collectively, end up being 'a big thing.'
