My Organized Grocery List Method

Hi Maria,

I made a pre-printed list of the grocery items I purchase most regularly and I keep copies in my file drawer.

The list is organized by store aisles so I won't 'walk by' the item while in the store.

I only have to put a checkmark next to the item.

This list also helps me to not forget to check my shelves if I question whether I need something before I leave for the store.

I've taken this a step or two farther. I've built a spreadsheet over the years of what I need to buy, and where to get it, and what the regular and sale price is. But I never delete things from the master list. The first field is a status: 1 for buy now, 2 for something I'll need soon, ... 9 means I don't need it, sort it to the bottom of the list. But it still saves the item, so when I need it again, I can just change that field to a 1 and push it back to the top. I can even mark an item '86' for 'Never buy this again' for things we didn't like.

I have additional columns for the town, store name, and department in the store, so that my list is grouped by where I'm at...and when I shop one store, other stores nearby are collected together on the list. When I make a longer shopping trip like I did yesterday, it reminds me of what's in that area that I don't usually visit. I can also make notations like 'Opens at 10am' or 'Closed Monday.'

Perhaps the most important feature is that it lets me track both the current price, and the best sale price at any of my local stores, so I know for sure if something is a bargain or not.

When I see something in a store, instead of buying it, I'll write it on my list, along with the store and price. When I get back to my spreadsheet I can check and see if it's a good deal or not and/or check my pantry to see if I've got it or not.

Alas, the post on the fridge trick doesn't work here. We've got the wood panel door that matches the rest of the kitchen. We have no place in the kitchen that we can even hang things with a magnet. So we have a white board and markers in the laundry room for list additions and honey-dos.

  In Closing

I went down the street to the 24-hour grocery. When I got there, the guy was locking the front door. I said, 'Hey, the sign says you're open 24 hours.' He said, 'Yes, but not in a row.'
