Finding the Time and Motivation to Exercise

Part of being organized is taking care of yourself. Part of taking care of yourself is exercise. Perhaps you exercise regularly. Maybe you don't. Maybe you don't enjoy exercising. It might feel like torture to you. It might be the perceived time commitment required. It may be you don't love the gym you're going to or the environment you're exercising in (I have a friend who is always complaining that her treadmill is in her unfinished basement...and she hates going down there.) Stil, humans need to exercise if they want to be healthy and fit. People need to move.

We all know, through common sense and countless amounts of research, that there are multiple health benefits to physical activity. Yet, it's important to determine how to find the time and motivation to make a real commitment to it. These may help:

1) Make physical activity more fun by combining it with other fun activities. Listening to an eBook or music, or getting your best friend or kids to join you, can make exercise time go by a whole lot quicker and seem like a lot less work. Plus, working out with a friend or family member is good multi- tasking...you're both getting a workout and spending quality time together simultaneously. You can even watch a TV show while walking on the treadmill, or while doing push ups and leg lifts. Maybe you love getting outside in nature and hearing the birds while you are partaking in physical activity. What about exercising with your dog? You can go play a game of fetch or go for a walk. This will benefit both you and your pet.

2) Try group activities. I can't begin to tell you how much fun my fitness class attendees have in the Zumba, Pound Fitness, and Silver Sneakers classes I'm teaching. Yes, they're exercising, but they're together and socializing too. You might, instead, be interested in a group sport, like bowling, volleyball, or softball. In addition, don't discount smaller groups of one, two, or three people that you can coordinate yourself, like having friends over to do the exercises being presented on a dance or Yoga DVD.

3) Start small and get yourself moving. Stop looking at the big picture, like working out for an hour or more, 5 days a week. That's very overwhelming, especially if it has been awhile since you've done any kind of physical fitness. Start small with 5 minutes of physical activity every other day. Then, 10 minutes, every other day. Then 15 minutes every other day. You get the idea. Set yourself up for success by setting realistic goals and expectations from the get-go...and don't forget to celebrate your successes!

4) Change up your exercise routine...or not. Some folks need variety when it comes to exercise. Some don't. You have to do what's right for you...the things you enjoy and that keep you moving. You are the captain of your ship.

5) Make exercise a priority. Everyone has priorities in life. You know what yours are. Is exercise one of them? If not, push physical fitness further up on your list and rather than saying, 'I have no time to exercise,' instead say, 'Here's what I can move around or do differently to fit in exercise, because it's important enough for me to get it figured out.'

6) Remember, some daily activities are 'exercise in disguise.' If you're cleaning house, raking, gardening, organizing the garage, and other activities that make you break out in a sweat, those are all forms of exercise and they all count. These all come with a bonus...you're working out, and getting your chores done too. Score!

7) Make an activity you love to do dependent on whether or not you exercise. Sometimes the best motivation we can give ourselves is delayed gratification. Exercise first...then do the activity you really want to do (surf Facebook, chit chat with a friend, read a novel) the reward for all your efforts.

So, if you're spending a whole lot of time sitting, and only a tiny bit of time moving, make a commitment to yourself to get organized to get moving. Doing so can make a huge difference in your overall health, and enhance your mood, your self-confidence, and self-worth.

Yes, it's important to organize our schedules, our paperwork, and to declutter our homes. It's equally important...actually more important...to take care of ourselves. Exercise is self-care. Give it a time slot in your daily schedule, and keep your motivation and energy up there using other people and things you love to do as inspiration.
