Is Shredded Paper Recyclable?

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I thought that shredded paper isn't recyclable. Can you please let me know?

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Marilyn,

Thank you for your question. I did a bit of research and here's what I learned. Apparently, for many locations, shredded paper is not welcome in the recycling bin. Because it's shredded, it causes problems at the sorting facilities. So now, you may be thinking, 'Well, what's the sense of shredding if I'm protecting my identity, but filling the landfill?' Life can certainly be challenging sometimes, isn't it?

Always check with your local trash/recycling facility. They all have different rules. In addition, here are some thoughts so you can protect yourself AND prevent filling up the landfills:

1) Minimize your shreds by tearing off the confidential portion of the document and shred just that part. Those shreds can go in the trash...the rest of the paper can be recycled.

2) Use it as packing material. No need to run out and buy bubble wrap. Keep a few bags of your shreds and use them to protect items you're mailing.

3) Use it in place of tissue paper in gift bags.

4) Add it to your compost pile. Over time, it will become part of the dirt.

Hope this helps!

  In Closing

The police can't protect consumers. People need to be more aware and educated about identity theft. You need to be a little bit wiser, a little bit smarter and there's nothing wrong with being skeptical. We live in a time when if you make it easy for someone to steal from you, someone will.
