____ 1. Fresh air in the house. I like the house to smell fresh and clean. While I do occasionally use them, I try to avoid aerosol air fresheners. Indoor air is often more polluted than we realize. Even upholstered furniture and rugs may give off some chemicals. The best way to keep your home smelling fresh is to open one or more windows once a day, even for as little as five minutes. If you can open more than one and get some cross currents, that is even better. You only have to open them a little way...just an inch or so makes a big difference. While we want to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer, just a little fresh air for your home every day can make a big difference.

____ 2. Screen-free zones. Most of us are pretty tied to our phones and other electronic devices. It becomes an almost mindless practice to check for messages, email, the latest news, etc. Some of us check it first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. But is this healthy...in terms of eye or neck strain? In terms of relationships? At our house, we have screen-free zones. The dinner table is the main one. Phones are tucked away and conversation reigns. Bed is another screen-free zone (except for e-readers only, which usually have a gentler-on-the-eyes screen). Reading and interacting on most screens has been shown to interfere with sleep, and is best avoided for an hour before bedtime.

____ 3. Inexpensive reading glasses wherever you need them. If you have reached a certain point in your life, you may find that print seems to be getting smaller or blurrier. It happens to nearly all of us, and many of us have turned to inexpensive reading glasses to read books, recipes, menus, phone screens, etc. If you have started to do this, you have probably noticed, that those 'cheaters' are never just where you need them. You left them on the bedroom nightstand and now you are in the kitchen, or you left them at home, and now you can't read the restaurant menu. The easiest solution is to have several pairs. Fortunately, you can do this inexpensively. You can have a pair for your purse, the kitchen, the office, the bedroom, the living room, or wherever you need them. I have this particular set. They're great for reading...and stylish as well. Visit:
