Questions About Self-Cleaning My Oven

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

First of all, I do hope you are staying warm up in the cold north!

Yesterday, I did my 'self cleaning oven' duty. Unfortunately, just where the door is shut, it didn't get cleaned.

1. How do I clean this area and not ruin my oven?

2. How do I get the lingering smell out of my house?

This Reader Question was submitted by:

--Carolann Phillipson, Naples, FL

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Carolann,

While the self-cleaning utility is handy, sometimes it 'misses' some areas, as is the case with yours where your oven door shuts. You can actually use an oven cleaning product, like Easy-Off, in your self-cleaning oven. Get the fume-free one. Your self-cleaning cycle should be turned OFF to do so and be sure your oven is cold. Spray the Easy-Off on the area you need to clean, close the door and wait for two hours for the foam to do its work, and then wipe clean with warm water and a wet sponge or paper towels.

The self-cleaning feature is going to emit fumes into your home. To help combat these, be sure you're following these steps BEFORE running the self-cleaning cycle.

1. Remove any large chunks of food from the oven floor and wipe up any visible spills. Remove any pans or foil...and the oven racks. Never self-clean with your oven racks in the oven.

2. If your oven allows, set the self-clean cycle to the shortest possible duration.

3. Be sure the oven vent (which is above or below the oven door, or behind the oven door handle) is uncovered. If there is a range hood, turn on the exhaust fan.

4. Open your windows and leave them open for as long as you can. That's why it's best to clean the oven on a nice, cool day.

5. The self-cleaning tool is going to release fumes. Be sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector...and that humans and pets avoid the area while it's running.

Once you've taken these precautions, run your self-cleaning oven utility. After the cycle is finished, consider running an air purifier to help rid your home of after-fumes.

Limit using this tool to no more than six times a year. This will help save energy, avoid wear and tear on the oven, and help you avoid the fumes.

One thing that I'm personally very careful about is, when there is a spill in the oven or if food falls on the oven floor, once the oven is cool, I manually clean it up right away. This helps prevent build-up...as well as the need for the self-cleaning feature. Also, if you're cooking something that's bound to drip (my cheesy lasagna comes to mind here), line the bottom of your oven with foil to catch any drips. Then, once the oven is cool, remove and discard the foil.

Hope this helps.

No matter what your dog's problem behavior is, be it jumping, peeing inappropriately, aggression, pulling on the leash...or whatever, there is ONE SOLUTION that can help STOP this problem now.

The sad fact is, most dog trainers miss this solution entirely. They give you cookie cutting training programs. They use outdated and `mean' dominance techniques. Or worse yet, they have no qualifications and are complete phonies. So what's the answer to stopping your dog's behavior problems? In 5 simple words...

Discovering your dog's hidden intelligence.

Let me explain. More intelligent dogs are better behaved. A more intelligent dog takes commands easier and understands what you need from them. The good news is, no matter how clever you think your dog is, you can unlock their hidden intelligence quickly and easily.

Don't waste a second longer coping with problem behaviors you don't need to be dealing with. Visit this link to learn more about Brain Training for Dogs:
