Bringing Calm Into Your Home

To quote the Dalai Lama 'Home is where you feel at home and are treated well.'

What is calm exactly? What does calm look like, smell like, taste like?

There are many ways to achieve calmness in your home.

First, you need to establish what the feeling of calm means to you...and in what areas do you want to achieve this feeling within your home. Also think about the why. Why do you want to bring calm in your home? Do you want a room or space that encourages self-care or a place where all the kid's toys can be put away? Clutter can be very distracting.

The first thing to think about is a place you truly love. A world traveller might want to be reminded of their favorite vacation place with mementos and souvenirs. Someone else who enjoys being around the beach or in the woods may incorporate colors and materials that remind them of these places. Surround yourself with décor items that you love such as photos of family members and artwork. A quick change to the mood of a room can be a new color of paint on the walls. Soft pastel colors will create a bright, airy feeling, and a larger space. While dark, rich colors can create contrast and a sense of intimacy. Color affects our mood and energy levels and impacts us on a physical, psychological, and emotional level.

Removing clutter from your home will help considerably in allowing your mind to focus. Having less stuff will help you to simplify your lifestyle. If you open your closet, stare at all the clothes, and feel stuck choosing an outfit, you might benefit from decluttering your clothing. Don't be afraid to have white space in between all your belongings. Give each room a purpose. Have a designated spot for each item to live in, such as a keyholder for your keys. It will save you time searching for them. Even simple chores such as washing up the dirty dishes or filing your paperwork will help you feel calmer and less overwhelmed. Find unique storage solutions that are both functional and attractive to help manage the clutter.

Build some calming elements into your day. This might include time to sit and enjoy a hot cup of tea or coffee or to snuggle in a soft throw blanket. Try curling up with a good book or playing with the family pet.

Remember your `senses.' Go beyond sight and engage with your other senses too. Some suggestions include lighting a scented candle such as citrus, lavender, cinnamon, vanilla, or peppermint. Listen to soft music. Put on a pair of fuzzy socks. Sip a new flavor of tea.

Bring in some natural elements such as a vase full of fresh flowers or a houseplant.

Use technology to help you such as an electronic calendar for scheduling appointments, but also give yourself time and space from technology. Create a time-out zone or technology-free zones within your house.

We all know life is busy and we are moving in 100 directions at once. It is nice to have a calm, relaxing environment to come home to. A calm home creates a calm heart and head.
