When You Have to Declutter in a Hurry
Decluttering is a job many folks tend to put off. Certainly, the task is easier
if we are in the mood to declutter. Sometimes we just know when we have reached
that point, and sometimes we have the luxury of 'all the time in the world' to
wait until we do.
But what if you don't have time? What if you have to clean-out and declutter...
fast? Maybe your sister is coming for an extended visit. Perhaps an adult child
needs to suddenly move back home. Perhaps you are faced with an unexpected move
or you have an elderly parent needing to move in. What then?
Most of us don't have an available 'empty room' to make this a no-worries,
no-stress situation. Chances are, you'll have to use a room that's typically a)
a room you're using to store things or b) a room that's functioning as something
else, like a home office or a craft room.
If the room you have to declutter fast mostly serves as a storage/holding area,
set aside some solid time to go through the items taking up the room's main
space, make decisions, donate, and discard. There may still be some stuff in
closets or bureaus, but with a bit of thought, and maybe some storage boxes and
closet/basement/attic space, the room itself can often become habitable pretty
quickly. Of course, get help if you're moving anything out that's heavy, so you
don't hurt yourself in the process.
If the room you have to declutter fast is being used for another purpose, like a
home office or craft space, you may have your work cut out for you. In these
circumstances, you generally don't want to 'lose' that space (even if it's only
temporary), but rather set up those spaces somewhere else in your home.
Assess the situation. How much time do you have? Will you need to buy a bed or
any other furniture? What can be donated or recycled? What can be relocated to
another room or storage space? Perhaps some bins can fit under the bed or in the
attic. Have a sewing machine you regularly use in that room? Can you find a
small table in a corner somewhere for it? Try to walk through and see your home
as if you were a friend giving advice to someone in your situation. Maybe it
will give you an idea of where things might go.
Sometimes, if the situation seems like it's truly going to be a temporary one
(maybe you're just helping a relative out while he or she recovers from
surgery), folks rent storage space. This is certainly OK (and actually a good
option) if you're only going to be storing for a month or two, but self-storage
can get pricey over time...and it's very easy for items you meant to only store
for a few months to end up being stored many months...or years. And really, if
whatever you have in storage has been in storage for months or years, and you're
not using it...do you really need to keep it in the first place and keep paying
those fees?
What if you have to declutter your whole home fast. For instance, you or your
spouse has gotten a sudden work transfer out of state, and you don't have much
time? This is challenging, but then again, it could be the inspiration you have
been needing. It can be easy to keep things that already have a home, but when
you don't know if there will be a spot for them at your new place and they don't
mean a lot to you, these may be much easier to get rid of.
This is especially true if you are downsizing. I would go room by room with a
garbage bag and begin by tossing all you know you need to get rid of that is not
worth donating. Next, go room by room and place things into a bag or box to
donate or give away. You may need to make more than one pass through each room,
maybe on different days. Some things are easier to relinquish the second or even
third time around.
In the event you are about to have an aging parent move in with you, there are
extra things to consider. This will be their new home, the room needs to feel
like theirs. This means more than an average decluttering job. This means
cleaning out as much as you can from closets and drawers, as well as moving out
extraneous furnishings. Things like throw rugs should be taken out to reduce the
risk of falls. Parents will have things they want to bring and will need space
for them.
While being faced with a sudden decluttering job may at first seem like an
impossible mission, you are capable of getting it done because you must. You may
even find the job easier than you anticipated because of those time limitations.
Sometimes people find they are more decisive about what goes, what stays, and
where they can put stuff when they are in a true time crunch. So take a deep
breath, and start that declutter job. You can do it.
