My Husband Un-Does My Organizing

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I try to organize the kitchen counter, but my husband undoes it the very next day. I've tried everything to get him to cooperate/help, but it doesn't work. Paper is the worst problem. Help!

This Reader Question was submitted by:

--Bev in Utah

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Bev,

This probably won't make you feel any better, but you're not alone. Kitchen counters, kitchen tables, and dining room tables are notorious for being 'landing spots.'

One way to cut down on the problem is to cut down on the paper, especially since paper is the worst problem in your case. Is it mail that's landing on the kitchen counter? Papers from work? One idea is to reduce what's landing on the kitchen counter in the first place.

Switch to digital correspondence and invoices, so they're emailed to you rather than being received as paper versions in the mail. Ask insurance companies, banks, and other financial institutions for their paperless mailings. Get off of store catalog and advertising mailing lists...just call the stores as you get the paper versions in the mail and ask to be removed from their 'snail mail' mailings.

How about a single basket that your husband can toss items into, so at least it's all contained and not spread all over the counter? Maybe if your hubby has to rummage through a basket to find his keys (for example...if that's something that's landing there), he'll be more likely to hang them on the key rack in the future.

Papers (that are not bills and don't require response) can be removed from the counter and tucked in a red rope folder, so they're all in one place if your husband wants to rummage through them while he's watching TV or during his reading hour.

Perhaps you can take a few photos (and make an itemized list) of what's landing there over the next two weeks and report back. Also, fill me in on how you've approached this situation with your husband (what you asked of him)...and how he has responded to it. I'd like to know if he's totally against what you're asking, or the system that's set up perhaps isn't right for his personality, or is he mindlessly putting items down, etc.? Perhaps, with a bit more information, I'll have a few more ideas for you in the future.
