  Organizing Tip

The Hardware Box

We have a large tool chest out in our garage, which houses the usual assortment of hammers, screws, pliers, etc. The drawers are all labeled, and it is not hard to find things. But even so, I am sometimes in a hurry for a screwdriver or pair of needle-nose pliers.

For those quick, around-the-house jobs, I keep a small tool/hardware box in the laundry room, quick to get to and easy to find tools in. A bit larger than a shoebox, my box contains several simple, useful tools and other hardware-type objects. There is a small pair of needle-nose pliers, a little hammer, flathead and Phillips screwdrivers, a few thumbtacks, and some duck tape. There is also both string and twine. There's a wooden skewer (useful for dust and lint trapped up in the vacuum canister, among other uses). There is a small bottle of glue and extra sliders in case we want to slide a heavy piece of furniture. In short, the box contains those odds-and-ends you find yourself suddenly in need of, and that you want to get to quickly.

When a friend's daughter moved to her first apartment, I filled a hardware box for her. She told me recently it was one of the most useful gifts she received, and she has made them for friends. She even decorates the boxes she gifts to her friends to fit the personalities of her gift recipients.

The hardware box will not take the place of a good supply of tools in your home. But for those quick jobs, or when it is cold, and you don't want to go dig through the tool chest in the garage for a small hammer, the hardware box is the perfect go-to.
