How to Put Some Spring in Your Step and Make This Season Productive
Hope you're enjoying the first few days of spring! The warmer temperatures, as
well as the longer daylight hours, always seem to give me more energy and make
me feel more productive than I did in the colder winter months. Just as
everything is starting to wake up outside, now is a good time for us to do the
same. Come out of winter hibernation, so to speak, and get motivated to become a
better, more organized person.
One way I like to feel more productive during spring is to start my day a little
ahead of when I was waking up during winter...15 minutes earlier. Fifteen
minutes may not seem like a lot, and really it isn't, but even that short amount
of time helps me to get a jump on my day. In that time, I start (sometimes even
complete) a task. I might add some food to the slow cooker for dinner, write
down 10 business or personal ideas, or catch up on a few things I need to read.
That 'first thing in the morning' feeling of accomplishment may be a small one,
but it sets a precedent for the rest of the day.
Second, I like to make time every day for a brisk walk...or two. Even a ten or
fifteen minute walk pumps up my energy levels. Sometimes I do this first thing
before I even have a cup of coffee, occasionally right after lunch, sometimes
directly after dinner...or now and then, I break a long walk into two shorter
walks choosing two of these optimal times of day based on my schedule. There is
no need for me to mention the benefits of exercise, but I really feel that the
positive feelings it produces makes me more likely to get things done AND puts
me in a better mood. Once the energy from the walk kicks in, I find I am better
equipped to tackle whatever I have waiting for me to accomplish.
Third, while I'm out and about, I'm always mindfully looking out for something
beautiful, unusual, new, different, fun and/or simply something I appreciate.
When I spot it, I take a quick cell phone photo of it. Later on in the day,
I often post it on social media with a few comments. It's a fun activity that
reminds me of how much I love this season and all that comes with it. Plus, it
always makes me feel good to share with someone else.
Lastly, I have a list of Spring TO DOs that I want to accomplish this season,
like touching up some chipped paint under my kitchen counter, cleaning out the
kitchen cabinets one by one, hemming a skirt...and such. There are 25 TO DOs on
the list...each will take 10 to 30 minutes to accomplish. There are also 25 fun
rewards on the list. I've scheduled out this time each day on my calendar, so I
get these all done before the start of summer. When the day and time that I've
scheduled is here, I do that TO DO. When the TO DO is DONE, I choose one of
the rewards (like enjoying a glass of fresh brewed iced tea while reading my
favorite magazine or mindlessly enjoying Pinterest for 20 minutes) and enjoy
it!
Spring is a great time for new beginnings. I hope you savor this season and find
these thoughts to be a productivity boost for you as well.
