It's frustrating to begin putting a fitted sheet on a bed, and soon realizing that I started putting the shorter side on the longer side and having to start over. When I get new sheets, I discreetly write on every corner, with permanent marker, an 'L' on the long side and an 'S' on the short side. I never have to guess anymore...I know exactly which way it goes.
