The Importance of Adaptability

The past few weeks have been a challenge of adaptability for many people. With schools being closed down, many jobs on hold, travel and events heavily impacted, stores out of stock on the most basic and important items, social distancing, and countless other new measures in place to protect ourselves and others, our everyday routines have seen quite a bit of disruption.

While life can be very routine most of the time, there's one thing for sure. You just never know when life as we know it can change in an instant. While it certainly isn't exactly easy and comfortable to adapt, it could have many benefits in the long run.

1) It gives us the opportunity to be solution-oriented instead of problem-oriented. While routines are fabulous, when there is change in our lives, it forces us to think outside the box. For instance, some schools have beautifully demonstrated that learning doesn't have to stop if kids aren't sitting within the walls of an actual classroom. Restaurants that cannot accommodate guests inside have offered take-out options. Gyms that are temporarily closed have Facebook live and other online classes. No, we can't always do things the way we've always done them, but with the willingness to adapt, we can make a whole lot of things work.

2) It helps us reduce stress and anxiety in ourselves, and others. Whenever change is present, all too often, stress and anxiety are present too. Not too many people embrace 'the unknown.' When we're willing to adapt, however, we're giving our brain a greater sense of calm. So, rather than worrying about what's going to happen next, we take a deep breath with a can-do attitude, and move forward in the best way we can. We are proving to ourselves that we can do things in other ways...and we may be helping to motivate and encourage others. When they see how we're adapting, it may open their mind to new possibilities as well.

3) We become more able and willing to accept future change. The more adaptable we have to be, the easier it becomes to be adaptable in the future. There are always going to be transitions in life, whether that is due to a necessary career change, a family addition or loss, a financial problem, a health challenge, and sometimes even a global pandemic as we've been going through together. Once we realize we can adapt and get over a hurdle, we're more apt to believe we can conquer the next, which gives us the strength we need to do so.

Adaptability removes helplessness and hopelessness. It gives us the confidence that no matter what, we'll do what it takes.
