Feeling Sad and Unmotivated...Any Words of Advice?
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
It has been a very challenging two weeks so far since the coronavirus outbreak
and new rules and regulations. My six and eight year old kids have been home
from school...constantly pushing them to do their online school assignments has
been a bear to say the least. I'm home as well because I work in a restaurant
and our dining room is currently closed and it's only providing take-out. I'm a
server, so I'm essentially out of a job temporarily. I'm going a bit stir crazy,
never mind the fact that the bills are piling up. I'm feeling very sad and
unmotivated. Any words of advice?

Maria Gracia responds...
Hi Stacy,
No doubt about it. This has been a trying time indeed. First, it's very
important to do whatever you can to keep a positive outlook...for yourself and
for your family, no matter how challenging that is right now. Wake up and work
out to give yourself some energy. Limit the time you're spending watching the
news...which can be kind of depressing. Watch motivational videos and read
inspiring books instead. Keep in touch with positive friends. Every day, remind
yourself that sometimes we have to live in a bit of darkness to appreciate the
light to follow.
Try to keep your kids on a schedule that provides them with some fun activities
in between the work. Short bursts of working on their projects for 20 to 30
minutes, several times a day, can be followed with some fun time outside in the
yard or watching a fun video online, etc. Remove distractions while the work is
being done (i.e. no TV, no phones, etc.) and keep reminding them that rewards
follow school work. Also, remind them of how proud you are of them making these
changes...a change of routine is never easy.
Being out of work is very difficult and is affecting many people globally. It's
a good time to reassess spending habits. Perhaps stop some services that aren't
necessities right now. Maybe use this time to update your resume or find some
online work to bring in some extra money.
Life sure can be challenging sometimes. Let's hope we all find ourselves stronger
after this crisis is behind us. Hugs!
