In response to your March 6th As I Was Sitting in Starbucks newsletter issue:

Regarding your tip about saying your name when greeting someone you haven't seen in awhile, I have done this for quite some time. However, I would like to know of a polite way to get that person to reveal their name also. I've tried, 'Pardon my brain freeze, but remind me of your name again.' This works most of the time, but I'm not sure if it sounds discourteous. Any other suggestions?

Also, can you put a suggestion out there to have everyone identify themselves when they make a phone call? As you know, Caller I.D. doesn't always reveal the name of the party calling. I find it disconcerting when someone starts chatting away, and I'm thinking, 'who is this?'

I honestly feel it's perfectly fine to ask them to remind you of their name. Very often, when we run into someone unexpectedly, our brains do freeze! Another reader (see below) has some good verbiage for this situation as well.

On your second point, good reminder! I've had that happen to me before as well. Plus, I've gotten texts from people who aren't in my stored cell phone list. They don't always 'sign' their name and I'm thinking the same thing...'who are you?'

As I've aged, it's been very embarrassing to run into people that I should know their names but can't recall. So, I decided to just say, 'I'm so sorry.
