Do you have organizational information or tools for someone who wants to
leave organized info for family?
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
Thanks for all the tips and information I've learned from you over the years. Do
you have any organizational information/tools for someone with cancer who (just
in case) wants to leave organized info for family such as bills, insurance
policies, investments all in one place?

Maria Gracia responds...
Hi Maureen,
I'm trying to figure out, by your note, if you are having these health struggles
or if one of your loved ones is. Either way, I am so sorry to hear about these
challenges and I'm sending thoughts and prayers. Thinking about making things
easier for others by getting important documents organized is such a kindness in
my mind. When someone is going through an illness, their loved ones can be
deeply affected as well.
My best suggestion would be to corral all of these important documents in one
place. A portable letter file box
is an easy, inexpensive way to go. By having one of these, all important papers
can be filed in one central location.
Think of any and all documents that a family member may be looking for at some
point in the future. If these documents are currently being stored in a safe or
safety deposit box, that is fine. Keep them there. But I suggest making copies
of all of these things and then store them in the letter box as well. This will
make it so much easier for family, as they will not be forced to search through
numerous locations to try to find paperwork they may be needing.
Being up-to-date on benefactors on any applicable policies is important as well,
to help avoid problems later on. Once everything is corralled, the file box
should be stored in a safe place, ensuring the person (or people) who will be in
charge of things knows where it is should the need arise to access it. They
should also know how to access your passwords in case of an emergency.
As any other relevant paperwork comes in, it can then be easily added to the
file box without giving it much thought. This will provide reassurance that
everything is in order.
Sending my warmest thoughts,
--Maria
