Don't Waste It...Make It Last Longer
I have never been a fan of wasting anything...money, food, time, etc. Lately,
with the store shelves empty in so many places (my regular supermarket shelves
haven't had toilet paper in weeks...not even the off brand), there is even more
reason not to waste things unnecessarily. When you really think about it, being
wasteful is a very easy thing to do. Before the global pandemic, when we were
running low on something, we'd stop at the store or order online...and replenish
without even thinking twice about it.
We probably didn't notice how much toilet paper, tissues, paper towels,
napkins, etc. were being used. We may have shrugged our shoulders when our kid
tossed away half of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich when he got full or bored
with it. Trying to get that last drop of soap out of the dispenser may have
seemed to be way too much trouble.
Now that we have shortages, being mindful of only using what we need or making
whatever we have last longer is a pretty important thing to do. Here are just
a few ideas I had related to this:
1: Toilet Paper: Do you remember the 'spare a square' episode on the TV
series Seinfeld? If you don't know what I'm talking about, Google it. It was a
very funny episode, but in reality, running out of toilet paper isn't something
to laugh about. These days, it's important to make toilet paper rolls last
longer. One way to do this is to be sure we're not wasting it in the first
place. Encourage your family (especially young children) to only use what is
truly needed...and review what you mean by 'truly needed' with them.
2: Paper Towels: While paper towels are definitely necessary for some
things (they're especially useful when someone in the family is ill so there is
no cross-contamination going on with regular towel-use), grabbing one is more of
a habit in many cases. If you're not ill and you can use a regular towel, that's
a lot less wasteful since it could be washed and reused. In fact, it's good
practice these days for every family member to have his or her own towel to be
especially conscious about not spreading germs. Use microfiber clothes for
cleaning whenever possible...again, they can be washed and reused.
3: Napkins: Cloth napkins hold up better than paper towels, are less
wasteful, are pretty, and are way less expensive than using paper napkins all
the time.
4: Laundry detergent and softener: It's so easy to use way more than what
you actually need. Don't just eyeball the amount and dump it in. If you do,
you're likely using WAY more than what's actually needed to do the wash. Use the
fill lines on the cap as your guide. Same with liquid softener. Oh, and the same
with dryer sheets...I always cut mine in half.
5: Bath and shower soap: Apply these products to a loofah rather than
directly to your body...you don't need much to make a lot of suds. One squirt
should be all you need for one bath or shower for each person.
6: Stretch food: The other day, my supermarket ran out of chicken. In
many stores, the meat shelves are empty right now. When you can get an
ingredient that is in low supply, try to stretch it out over a few meals. For
instance, rather than making a roast chicken dinner, where chicken is the
primary ingredient and most of it is eaten by a family in one night, stretch
that one chicken to make MANY meals. With one chicken, for instance, you can
make a chicken/rice casserole, a chicken salad, a buffalo chicken pizza, and a
veggie chicken stir fry. While chicken is present in each of these mentioned
meals, it's no longer the primary ingredient and lasts much longer.
Please reply back and let me know your thoughts on how to stop wasting something
or how you make it last much longer. We'll include your replies in future
newsletters.
