Being Prepared 'Just in Case'

Maria,

In response to your April 8th newsletter issue:

Hi Maria,

My heart goes out to your reader who asked about being prepared 'just in case.' For those of us who are fortunate enough to be currently in good health and at home, now is a good time to get our important information together.

Both of my children know which drawer in my house to check first if something should happen to me. The contents of that drawer change as needed, but my girls know where to start. They also know the master password for my password manager. (I chose my master password based on constants from their childhood that are easy for them to remember.) I'm working on a notebook listing all my assets and other information they might need; that notebook lives in the designated drawer.

I'm also working on a list for myself which I've headed, 'Where is it?' Like many people, I have a lot more stuff than I need. Some of it needs to be culled and some of it needs to be kept, but if I can't find what I need, having the stuff does me no good. So I keep a list of what I have boxed and where the boxes are located (and of course, the boxes are labeled). The list lives on my computer but periodically I print it out and put it in the designated drawer so my girls will know, before they even have to look, whether they even want to open a particular box.

Regarding having copies of the contents of one's safe deposit box, everyone should do this! In my file drawer, I've always kept a list of what's in the safe deposit box as well as copies of any documents I might want to look at for some reason. For example on my list are 'car title' and 'house deed,' but I have actual copies of my savings bonds in my house in case I want to check maturity dates. I can't tell you how many trips to the safe deposit box I've saved by having the list and copies in the house. Also, everyone should have a will, stored OFF premises in a safe place (NOT in the safe deposit box which can take time to access in an emergency) with a photocopy stored in the house with other important papers.

Being of an age to know a lot of people who have too much stuff that they're 'saving for the kids,' I offer one last piece of advice. If there's something special you want your kids to have, there are several good options. (1) give it to them now or (2) make sure they know what it is and where it is and (3) clear out your clutter so they can find it, and (4) put a label on it, especially furniture. I have spoken to friends who think their children will go through all their stuff to find the special items, but when I talk to the children, they tell me that either they don't want any of it or their parents have an overwhelming amount of stuff and they'd never be able to get through it so they'll just call an estate clean-out service. There's also a huge disparity between what the parents think is special and what the kids think is special... they should ALL talk with each other about this!

Sorry to be so long-winded, but you've opened a very important topic. I've learned a lot of this stuff the hard way and hope to spare some other people the same experience.

Thanks for your newsletters. I enjoy them enormously...and really appreciate that you tell us the time it will take to read them!
