GON Web Poll Results

We recently asked GON readers, 'How are you holding up through the global
pandemic?' Here are the results of that poll:
44% I'm doing pretty good, but I've had some moments of feeling down.
35% I'm doing fine emotionally. Just looking forward to better tomorrows for
others.
11% I've had many ups and downs lately.
5% I am struggling with daily frustration and/or worry.
4% Other
1% This has been devastating for me. I've lost loved ones.

TO DO This Week

____ 1. Contact friends. Many of us are feeling the strain that social
distancing has put on us. Our usual day-to-day contacts have been significantly
decreased, if not completely eliminated. This can leave us all feeling like we
need some human interaction thrown into our day. Take the time to call up a
friend and actually talk instead of texting. Or, do a video call on Skype,
Facetime, or Zoom. The simple act of checking in, as well as hearing someone's
voice and/or seeing their face, can make a HUGE difference, especially for
anyone who lives alone. Humans are social creatures, and the isolation that we
are currently under is emotionally challenging. Make it a point to check in with
your friends and anybody else who may be experiencing some loneliness at this
time. The connection can be extremely beneficial for them and you.
____ 2. Inventory your fridge and pantry. As we find ourselves in the
midst of this global pandemic, many people made a mad dash to the grocery store
to stock (and in some cases over-stock) on non-perishable foods, cleaning and
hygiene products, and paper products. Although it is good to be prepared, this
mad dash caused many empty store shelves with some people having tons of these
items...and many having none. Before you order online or plan your next grocery
run, take an honest inventory. If you have three boxes of pasta in your pantry,
do you really need more right now? If you have four rolls of paper towels, can
you forgo buying them on your next purchase. Can you make a bunch of meals
simply using the ingredients in your freezer or pantry, rather than making a
grocery run right now? Taking an honest inventory and only buying what you truly
need for the coming week or two will not only cut down on your grocery bill, but
will leave the food items on the store shelves for somebody who is completely
out of those items.
____ 3. Clean your windows. We can all use more light and clarity in our
lives right now. So, while it's wonderful to look out a window that is clean and
clear, washing windows is also an excellent meditative and mentally cleansing
activity. Grab some glass cleaner and wipe down the inside of each window in
your home...a few a day until all fingerprints, smudges, and streaks are gone.
Living room windows, sliding doors, and windows near the areas where you spend
the most time are all good places to start. As you clean each window, think
about something in your life that may be bringing you down or stressing you out.
Then, as you're washing each window, imagine yourself erasing that stress. When
it's clean and clear, take a moment to enjoy the clarity and perhaps the
clearer, calmer outlook you've just given yourself.

GON Quick Tip All of us are, hopefully, disinfecting the toilets in our
homes...even more so now with the coronavirus crisis. But, are you keeping the
toilet brush clean as well? If you're putting it right back in the holder when
you're done cleaning the toilet, it may be harboring harmful bacteria. Here's
what you should be doing...
GON Reader Web Poll (NEW!) How are you holding up FINANCIALLY through the
COVID-19 crisis? Some people haven't been affected at all. Others have lost
their jobs and are uncertain how they're going to pay their bills. Take our poll

'Isolation allows us to get to know our family, our friends, strangers and
ourselves. It will either break us or it will make our relationships stronger.
If you're alone, shout out of a window; put up a handwritten window poster; call
someone, watch TV, do yoga, play games, but never let it win the loneliness
stakes, because that is when there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Stay
strong because the world needs you to be who you are.'
