Recipes for Hand Sanitizer and Disinfectant
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
I would really appreciate a few reliable recipes for hand sanitizer and
disinfectant. We already know that the stores are limited in what we can get and
it's increasingly more difficult to acquire the needed items. Thank you.

Maria Gracia responds...
Dear GON Readers,
Thank you for asking about hand sanitizer. When many of us are so used to just
picking up what we need at the grocery store or at stores like Bath and Body
Works, it can be frustrating when it's near impossible to get it when you run
out.
That being said, from everything I've read thus far, washing your hands well,
with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds, is one of your very best defenses
when it comes to preventing the spread of germs. Here is the exact hand-washing
system on the CDC web site:
1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap,
and apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of
your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the 'Happy
Birthday' song from beginning to end twice.
4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
Your next best defense is NOT touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. You would not
believe how much the average person typically does this to, perhaps, scratch the
nose, rub the eyes, get an eyelash out of an eye, etc. Some studies have said
that we touch our faces 16 times every hour! So, definitely be mindful of
this...and wear a mask when out among other people or when you are ill. The main
purpose of the mask is not to protect you from catching the virus, but rather to
stop you from touching your eyes, nose, or mouth...it helps to remind you not to
do it.
Only revert to store-bought hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily
available because hand sanitizers do not get rid of all types of germs. The hand
sanitizer must contain 60 to 90 percent alcohol. Chances are, they're going to
be very difficult to find right now...although you may be able to find an
off-brand somewhere.
That being said, I don't feel comfortable giving you a homemade recipe because
you can seriously risk damaging your skin/hurting your hands AND the recipe may
not be reliable either, giving you a false sense of security. Instead, don't
touch your eyes, nose, or mouth, and wash your hands effectively and often.
As far as disinfecting goes, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) lists
specific EPA-registered disinfectants that you can purchase. If you can't find
them, the CDC web site has information on bleach solutions and rubbing alcohol
solutions, depending on the surface you're attempting to disinfect. For details,
visit:
CDC Cleaning and Disinfection for Households
Also, in case you're wondering, while you can use vinegar to clean, vinegar
isn't the best option for killing viruses. It's just not as effective as
standard household cleaners. In fact, even regular soap and water can be more
effective than vinegar as a disinfectant.
