Donation centers are closed. What should I do with my stuff?

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I've been working on decluttering my house. But the donation centers are closed. So, what do I do with all this stuff?

This Reader Question was submitted by:

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Analore,

Congratulations on your decluttering efforts. I bet you feel so much lighter. That's just wonderful!

Depending on where you live, many donation centers are either closed down completely under stay-at-home orders or open limited hours and only accepting certain kinds of items. This is to keep those donating safe, as well as the organization's staff members. So definitely call your local charitable organizations to determine their needs and if there are any options for donation drop-offs. Definitely don't drop your donated items outside their doors without checking first. Charities that are accepting donations are likely only doing so if items have been properly sanitized as well.

What's needed most at many of these organizations at this critical time are monetary donations...and some are hoping for hygiene and cleaning products, but again, each charity differs.

If you cannot find any drop-off donation center options, and chances are this will be the case, store those boxes or bags, clearly labeled DONATE, in your basement, attic, spare room, or an out-of-the way closet and donate them when stay-at-home orders have been lifted. I know this isn't ideal...but at least the decluttering work is done and all that's left is the final drop-off.

Again, congrats on a decluttering project well done!

GON Quick Tip All of us are, hopefully, disinfecting the toilets in our homes...even more so now with the coronavirus crisis. But, are you keeping the toilet brush clean as well? If you're putting it right back in the holder when you're done cleaning the toilet, it may be harboring harmful bacteria. Here's what you should be doing...

GON Reader Web Poll (NEW!) How are you holding up FINANCIALLY through the COVID-19 crisis? Some people haven't been affected at all. Others have lost their jobs and are uncertain how they're going to pay their bills. Take our poll and let us know. I'll share results in an upcoming newsletter.

GON Web Poll Results I recently asked GON readers how they're holding up EMOTIONALLY during this pandemic. See the poll results and some personal reader comments as well.
