It's OK if You're Not Exactly Feeling OK

Ever since this virus began gaining ground, I've been doing whatever I felt was necessary to keep my emotions in check. I've been strictly following stay at home orders, ordering groceries online and picking them up, wearing a mask if I need to drop by an essential business to buy something, washing my hands, keeping my eyes away from my face, social distancing...and all the directives we've been given to keep ourselves, our families, and others safe.

I've also been doing things to help maintain a sense of normalcy...eating right, teaching (online) fitness classes I normally teach at the gym, keeping my home clean, waking up and going to bed at the same times I always do, sticking to a personal and work schedule, finding ways to stay connected, giving myself many reasons to smile, etc.

Just like everyone, I have concerns and fears. I also have an immense amount of hope for better tomorrows ahead.

Last week, I was going about my day and I saw a video pop up on Facebook from the governor of Wisconsin (where I live) stating that our stay-at-home orders were extended. I honestly figured they would be, so I wasn't surprised. It was a rather long video that I decided to watch beginning to end to be sure I understood any new directives that were being given.

At a point in the video, the governor mentioned that schools in my state were going to be closed for the remainder of the year...which I also expected.

All of a sudden, it hit me as to what this meant for the kids who are seniors in school right now.

And then I just started crying.

It was less than a minute before I pulled myself together, but I immediately afterwards thought to myself, 'Why...after more than a month of being in this crisis, am I feeling so emotional at this moment?'

So I began analyzing. Even though this decision was a necessary one, it's definitely sad. The kids are missing out on enjoying this last third of the school year with their friends. Graduations and proms may have to be 'virtual' or canceled this year. For many seniors, this was the last chance to play sports with their high school friends, go to state competitions, attend dances, compete in forensics meets, be in the spring school play, etc. Their parents must be absolutely heartbroken for them. I'm so sad for the many seniors I know...and for their parents as well.

And then I realized that hearing about schools remaining closed at that moment, even though it was inevitable and I was well-aware it was going to happen, was a 'tipping point.' Each and every thing that has happened thus far with this crisis is another weight on one side of a scale, even if we don't notice these weights affecting our emotions at the time they're happening.

For instance:

We can't leave our homes. One weight.

The groceries we ordered online can't be picked up for days. Another weight.

We're worried about a family member who is ill. Another weight.

We are furloughed from a job or our working hours are cut. Yet, another weight.

Another bill arrives in the mail. More weight.

The dishwasher breaks. A little more weight

...and then the milk spills.

And then we cry.

Emotions are running very high right now. It's OK if you end up crying (or feel like crying) now and again, because honestly, sometimes we just need to feel some of those weights lifted off of us. In other words, it's OK if you're not exactly feeling OK. Let it out.

And after we've had a chance to cry, it's time to get back to doing what we can to feel 'together' again.

* Keep structure in each day. * Be good to yourself...eat right, exercise, stay hydrated. Don't feel guilty about taking an extra long shower or giving yourself a home facial.

* Talk to people. Video chats are great because you get to 'see' people. But the phone is a good standby as well. Express your feelings. Let others express theirs.

* Help others by offering skills, services, or support (sewing cloth masks, helping your kid with math, dropping off groceries for a neighbor who is unable).

* Keep busy...declutter, clean, work on a scrapbook, write in a journal, learn something new

Cry a little. Laugh as much as possible.

Stay healthy. Stay well. Stay hopeful.

  In Closing

'Sometimes we get sad about things and we don't like to tell other people that we are sad about them. We like to keep it a secret. Or sometimes, we are sad but we really don't know why we are sad, so we say we aren't sad but we really are.'
