Do you have tips for living in small quarters?
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
Many of us live in small spaces...I still live in a studio apartment (the
building is from the 1930s) with only two closets, a galley kitchen, and my
living room IS my bedroom (I have a murphy bed). Tips on living in tight
quarters might help your readers (and would always help me!). Since I live
alone, it is less challenging than for those who live with a number of people in
a small space. Stay safe and be well!

Maria Gracia responds...
Dear Karen,
Hope you're healthy and safe during this oh-so-challenging time.
One advantage of having to live in a small space is that you are forced to limit
the number of things you bring into the house. More room means more
opportunities for clutter to make its way in. That being said, it does require
you to make better use of the space that you do have.
For instance, in your closets, using over-the-door hanging pockets to store
scarves, undergarments, etc. frees up closet and drawer space. In the bathroom,
an over-the-tank type storage unit may allow you to make use of space that
generally can't be used for anything else...and will give you extra room for
storing towels, toiletries, etc.
A coat rack to hold jackets, umbrellas, and outerwear, which would normally eat
up a lot of your closet space, may be an option. If a coat rack is not
plausible, try using wall hooks for storing these items. When placed near the
front door, they give you easy access to these items when coming into or leaving
the apartment. They help combat the urge to throw a jacket on a couch or chair
as well.
In general, walls are one of the most untapped storage resources. If you don't
have them already, consider getting tall bookshelves that can go as close to the
ceiling as possible. This will greatly increase your storage space while only
taking up a small amount of valuable floor space. When purchasing furniture,
look for choices with storage space, like ottomans that can fit blankets inside,
or nightstands with drawer space. There are many space-saving (removable)
organizers on the market to save space inside closets and cabinets.
Cutting way down on the number of non-essential things that you may have lying
around is one of the easiest ways to regain space. Although knick knacks and
decor items are fun to look at, the fewer you have, the less cluttered your
entire home will seem...and be. A more minimalist approach goes a long way for
small spaces.
Thanks so much for your letter...and may be well through this health crisis,
and always!
