How to Organize My Makeup...and What Color is in that Tube?
A GON Reader Asks
Hi Maria,
I have massive amounts of makeup. How do I organize it so I can find things
easily? I work, so my makeup goes on in the morning and often until 9:00PM. And
how do you know what color is in a lipstick tube?

Maria Gracia responds...
Hi Sheri,
Thanks so much for your questions. In response to question one, it's perfectly
OK to have a nice variety of makeup if you actually use what you have often.
Some folks like to switch out eye shadows and lipsticks daily. Just be sure
there isn't a bunch of makeup products that have expired (eye makeup
specifically) or that you never use...which is often the case with 'massive'
amount of makeup as you described it. Reason being, the more makeup you have,
the more challenging it can be to keep it all organized, and fresh.
You probably have a basic routine with moisturizer, primer, foundation, blush,
eye makeup, and lipstick. Put your favorite basics in a makeup bag (or a little
organizing unit or turntable with compartments) that is easy to get to each
morning. For the rest, organize it by type. Either get a drawer-organizer or use
boxes in the drawers or on the shelves of your vanity, labeling each by general
category (skin care, foundations/concealers, eye makeup, lipstick, etc.).
Clear, acrylic storage allows you to see what you're looking for, and they're
reasonably-priced.
If you now find yourself working from home, you may be forgoing makeup entirely.
That works just fine for some people, and has helped them save tons of money.
However, if you are working from home and doing online video meetings, you may
want to wear a bit to 'look alive,' especially if without makeup you have that
'just rolled out of bed' look. I can't imagine doing a Zoom meeting without
applying at least my mascara and lipstick.
If you have sample sizes of makeup you like, stash some in a drawer at work or
in your purse for touchups...rather than tossing them in a drawer never to
be seen again.
To answer your second question, knowing which lipstick is which is tricky when
tubes look alike, the labels have worn off, and there's no indication of the
color on the tube. You might try using a label maker or a sharpie marker to
label the bottom of the tube with abbreviations, P for pink, R for red, M for
mauve, etc. If the tube contains a favorite color of red, pink, etc., add an
asterisk after the letter. Alternately, and this solution takes a bit more
time and effort, take photos of yourself wearing each lipstick, and print
those photos out or make a digital photo album. Number the lipstick tube with
a label and add a corresponding number to the photo.
Hope this gives you some ideas you can begin applying.
