Making Waiting Time Productive
The average person spends six months or more (some estimates say two to three
years) of their lives waiting in line. That works out to about three days a
year. And that is just in line. We spend probably more time than that waiting in
other places...the dentist's office, in line to get our driver's license
renewed, on hold on the phone, for the bus or train, for the oil to be changed
or the car inspected. That is a lot of time out of our lives. I hate wasting
time, it drives me a little crazy, and I suspect I am not alone. I have come up
with a few strategies for making use of time spent waiting for something or
someone.
On my phone, I keep a running list of quick tasks, and I turn to it whenever I
am stuck on hold, waiting for the coffee to brew, or for the repair person, who
said he would be there 'in about ten minutes.' Some of my whirlwind tasks
include: Clearing off a counter, gathering up newspapers and magazines that have
been left around, straightening cushions, cleaning the sink, sweeping the
kitchen floor, cleaning off my desk, watering plants, or writing a quick email.
For more extended periods, or when I have waiting time not at home, my first
choice is nearly always reading. My e-reader fits in my purse or tote bag and
goes to appointments, on public transportation, waiting for school or practice
to conclude, etc.
Other people I know have portable hobbies. My friend MaryAnn says she has
finished knitting many a scarf, in the past, as she waited for her sons'
basketball practices to end.
Sometimes I take work along. I may write while I wait, catch up on email, or
send a few texts. I may look for new recipes and plan menus to use them. One
friend of mine keeps a tote bag in her car with paper to write on, a couple of
magazines to read, and a book of crossword puzzles. By keeping it in her car,
she says she does not have to remember to take something if she is rushed at the
last minute.
Waiting in line at the grocery store or any other store presents a different
challenge. You cannot just tune out until your name is called. You have to pay
some attention to the line, and especially now with social distancing and such.
I have found standing in line to be a great time to delete unwanted emails,
provide a quick email answer, or to delete some photos from my phone.
You can accomplish a lot in the time you spend waiting in line or for other
things. What are your favorite ways to spend your waiting time? Reply and
let me know. I will add some of your responses to a future issue.
