Effortless Things You Can Do To Keep Clutter at Bay
Have you ever noticed some people seem to always, always, have tidy homes, no
clutter to be found? And do you ever wonder how they do it? Sally's neighbor,
Chris, was like that. Even with a husband, two teenagers, and no cleaning
person, her house was always clean and uncluttered. After visiting Chris, Sally
would return to her own home feeling defeated.
One day Sally asked Chris for her secret to always having such a clean house.
Chris laughed and said there was no real secret, just a lot of little routines
she and her family did that kept clutter under control. As they walked through
Chris's house, room by room, she explained her technique.
Her practices were simple and easily implemented. Mostly they are simple small
'add-on' behaviors that take only a couple of minutes. Like any new habit, you
have to think about them at first, but soon they become routine.
Make the bed every day and put away your PJs. Your bedroom becomes instantly
neater.
Quickly wipe down the shower doors and walls after your shower or use a daily
spray cleaner.
Put away makeup and toiletries as you use them and quickly wipe the countertop.
Cleaning basics, microfiber cloths or paper towels, a bowl brush, and cleaner
stored in each bathroom make it easy to do a very quick clean as needed.
In the living room, gather newspapers and magazines after reading. They go to
the recycle bin before being allowed to pile up.
Unread magazines or books on a coffee table or end table are neatly stacked,
edges parallel to the table edge.
Pillows are routinely fluffed and throws folded before turning off the lights at
night.
Toys can be picked up and stored in baskets at least before bed, more often if
appropriate.
One of the most important practices is to never leave a room empty-handed. If
you are going from the living room to the kitchen, take any glasses or snack
plates. Take any newspapers needing to go to the recycle bin. As you leave the
kitchen, remove papers, toys, etc. that belong somewhere else.
Don't let dishes pile up in the sink. When a meal is over, put them in the
dishwasher, or quickly wash them by hand.
Clean as you cook. As you finish using a utensil or bowl, add it to a sink
filled with soapy water. After dinner, quickly finish by wiping the counters,
sink, and faucet.
In the morning, empty the dishwasher as you wait for your coffee to brew.
Fold laundry when you take it from the dryer. Put it away.
Take off your shoes when you enter. Carpets and floors will stay much cleaner.
Wipe up spills and spots as soon as you see them.
Keep surfaces clear. It only takes a minute to grab things from the desk and
deal with them, trash them, or put them away. This is especially true for mail.
Get everyone on board. Anyone can carry things from one room to the one in which
they belong.
Does this sound like a lot, or like too much work? It really is not. Nearly all
of these practices can be done quickly, and become routine as you practice them.
Try a few...then try a few more. Before you know it, many of these will be as
routine as combing your hair...you won't even have to think about them. It will
eventually feel un-natural not to do them.
