Staying Financially Organized

Hi Maria,

My late husband and I kept track of every single expense, except for what we called 'personal money,' for 35 years. A lot of people thought we were crazy, but it was a wonderful way to see exactly what was going on in our financial life and to help us reach our personal goals. It made us think about what we spent our money on and allowed us to have a very comfortable life. During our marriage, we bought four houses...only the first needed a mortgage because of our spending habits, despite not making a profit on a single house sale over the years.

The key to making the whole thing successful was the concept of 'personal money' which came out of the family pot and was the same amount for each of us. My mother-in-law started this when we were newlyweds and still both in school (1970). She sent us a check for $10 each week with instructions to split it and to not account for it in any manner. (Apparently the impulse to keep track of every penny was hereditary and she knew how constraining that could be if there was no 'personal money.') This scheme worked beautifully for us because I was the impulse buyer in the family and my husband was the restrained one. After my husband passed away, I found his notebook where he kept track of how much of his 'personal money' was still in the bank. He had over $15,000 of his personal money saved and I, on the other hand, had spent (and enjoyed) all of mine!

We used our personal money for impulse purchases (I have a serious weakness for ice cream and eating lunch out with friends, while he tended to buy books), gifts for each other, and for anything that one of us wanted and the other wouldn't have been keen on. Other than the personal money, everything we spent was by mutual agreement, right down to door mats. The personal money never went above $50 per person per week (and my husband eventually made six figures), but that was plenty...I never felt like I was being limited.

Every week, month, and at the end of the year, we summarized our spending by category (eg. car expenses, food, drugstore, personal, house maintenance, yard) so that if things had gotten tight, we'd have had a good idea of where to start cutting our spending. I no longer keep track of every single penny, but the habit of considering what I spend still serves me very well.

I enjoy your newsletters tremendously. Thank you!
