Re-Organizing Your Health and Well-Being
In many cases, the global pandemic has caused the health and well-being of many
people (who have not been physically affected by the virus themselves) to take a
nosedive. Health experts are very concerned about issues they're seeing pop up
with many of their patients, including weight gain, sleep issues, mental focus,
increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs, depression, skipped health
screenings, and missed health treatments.
Here are some ways to re-organize your health and well-being, as we continue
navigating through these uncertain times.
1) Be active: I'm not going to argue the point of whether you should go
back into the world or stay at home. But I do highly recommend you stay active
in both cases. The more sitting there is, the more health problems are going to
arise. Exercise every day, for at least an hour. Even so, don't only get up
during that hour you're exercising. Be active throughout the day...walk, go on
the treadmill, take a group fitness class (at a facility that is going the extra
mile in taking safety measures), go for a swim, clean your house, do some
yardwork...anything that gets your heart pumping many times throughout the day.
2) Assess what you're eating: 'In a poll of more than 1,000 U.S. readers
of WebMD, nearly half of the women and almost one-quarter of the men said they'd
gained weight due to COVID restrictions.' No doubt. My Facebook feed has been
literally filled with pictures of food being offered, curb-side pick-up, by
local restaurants trying to stay afloat. People are eating more processed food
than ever. Many people who were cooking at home, had more time to cook more
elaborate meals and baked goods. There is even a name for this that went
viral...the Quarantine 15 (referring to the 15 pounds many people have put on
during this pandemic). It may sound cute...but for many, what seems as innocent
as some extra pounds can have detrimental issues such as heart attacks,
diabetes, etc. Stress eating has also been a huge issue in the past few months.
Now that it's summer, it's an excellent time to get back on track. Count
calories. Be sure the calories you are eating are nutritious ones. Limit sweets.
Make healthier choices if you eat out or get take out. Think salads and fresh
vegetables. Assess your pantry. If it's filled to the max with chips, cookies,
and other 'goodies,' it may be time to consider a clean-out.
3) Be social: One thing I've heard over and over through this pandemic
is, 'I haven't left my home' or 'I haven't seen a person since mid-March.' Yes,
we should be social distancing, but being in complete isolation can be not only
sad, but downright depressing. In fact, I hate the term 'social distancing'
because it implies we should not be social. A better term would have been
'physical distancing.' So, if you're choosing to remain home, it's important to
'be' with others who don't live with you, through video conferencing or Facetime
or on the phone. Don't allow the kids or teens to stay holed up in their rooms.
Eat family meals together. Play a game or assemble a puzzle. If you're
choosing to go back out into the world and you're feeling scared about being
with others, perhaps go on a walk with a friend...wear a mask, walk on opposite
sides of the street. You will still be with them...just not so close.
4) Avoid mental stressors: We have enough to worry about without adding
to our stress by engaging in heated arguments on social media. Plus, the news is
great for news, but too much of it (especially editoral news) can be overbearing
sometimes. Sometimes, we even have family members, friends, co-workers, and
associates in our lives who raise our levels of anxiety. Mental stress can cause
so much damage to our physical and emotional health. Shift your focus to stories
and people who remind you of the goodness of humanity, who don't focus on fear
mongering, and who are kind in their minds, hearts, and the words they speak. In
addition, participate in relaxing activities every single day (yoga, walking,
meditation, journaling, bird watching, sewing, etc.), several times a day, to
clear and soothe your mind and spirit.
5) Get your daily sunshine: There is really no excuse for being indoors
24/7. Staying inside all the time can cause anxiety, sleep issues, compromised
immune systems, fatigue, and a host of detrimental health issues. It also
encourages isolation and inactivity. Go outside and get your daily sunshine,
even if it's just in your backyard, on your front step. Doing so is good for our
minds and bodies, helps to increase our happiness quotient, and helps ensure we
don't end up with a Vitamin D defiency which can be detrimental to our immune
systems.
