Finding it Hard to Get Started. Easily Distracted.

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I clean house for an elderly couple and use a lot of your tips and decluttering ideas. Yes, they have 20+ years of built-up clutter. I have no problems helping them organize and downsize, but when it comes to my own home, I am finding it hard to even get started. And if I do, I easily get distracted. Is there anything you can suggest I do to keep on track? Thank you!

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Buffy,

Thanks so much for your note. I'm happy to offer you some suggestions.

First, it's easier to help downsize someone else's belongings because you typically don't have a personal attachment to another person's possessions. Second, it can be challenging to find the energy or desire to declutter and clean your own things, when you're investing significant energy and motivation cleaning out someone else's things. Third, whether you're getting paid or not for cleaning out for that couple, it's still a 'job' that you told them you're committed to doing. If you don't clean out your stuff, the person that affects is you, and it's usually easier to break promises to ourselves than to others.

That all being said, here are some ways you can get started on your own project, and follow through without getting off track:

1) To start, give yourself SMALL tasks that are do-able in small amounts of time that don't require big amounts of energy. For instance, I try to do small organizing and/or cleaning tasks every day. This may include straightening out a dresser drawer that's getting messy, organizing one small cabinet, weeding through a file folder or two...you get the idea--small jobs that I can always get done without too much time or effort. Write each task on an index card and choose one each day or night.

2) Commit to doing a SMALL task at the same time every day. The time of day will depend on your schedule. After dinner every night and before I take a shower and begin to wind down for the evening, I tackle one of these tasks. Accomplishing something, no matter how small, is a great way to end the day.

3) Set a timer at the beginning of each of these SMALL tasks (10 or 15 minutes tops), and work on them through to completion. The benefit of small tasks is that they can be done so quickly that it's tough to actually get distracted while you're doing them. Some people 'use' distractions (surfing social media and such) out of boredom. There's less of a chance of getting bored with small tasks.

4) Remember, large projects with many steps can easily be broken down into SMALL tasks and done over time.

5) Keep your eye on the prize. Delay something you really enjoy doing (reading crafting, watching TV, sifting through Facebook, etc.) until your SMALL task is complete.

Hope this helps a bit.

To fast forward to making your dog's problem behaviors disappear, visit:

www.getorganizednow.com/rd-brainy-dog.html

No matter what your dog's problem behavior is, be it jumping, peeing in the house, aggression, pulling on the leash...or whatever, there is ONE SOLUTION that can help STOP this problem now.

The sad fact is, most dog trainers miss this solution entirely. They give you cookie cutting training programs. They use outdated, mean, and unkind dominance techniques. Or worse yet, they have no qualifications to be offering advice. So what's the answer to stopping your dog's behavioral problems? In 5 simple words...

Discovering your dog's hidden intelligence.

Let me explain. More intelligent dogs are better behaved. A more intelligent dog takes commands easier and understands what you need. The good news is, no matter how clever you think your dog is, you can unlock your pet's hidden intelligence quickly and easily.

Don't waste a second longer coping with problem behaviors you don't need to be dealing with. Visit this link to learn more about Brain Training for Dogs:
