How to Organize Several Crafts

A GON Reader Asks

Hi Maria,

I do several crafts (sewing, jewelry, fabric ornaments with foam balls, journals with scrap paper, Silhouette.) How can I organize each of them in their respective spot?

This Reader Question was submitted by:

--Erika B, Columbia, MO

Maria Gracia responds...

Hi Erika,

Thanks for asking! I love to craft as well. Do you have a room dedicated exclusively to crafting...or do you store your craft supplies elsewhere and then pull what you need out to the kitchen or den?

If you have a dedicated room for crafting, it's a bit easier. Visually divide the room up into sections, keeping the supplies needed for each craft in their respective section. Keep in mind that it's usually best to have baskets, trays, shelving, etc. to help keep like-items with like-items. If your sewing machine can be near your sewing supplies, and your journals and Silhouette near your paper supplies, even better.

If you don't have a dedicated room, I would suggest three crafting storage units...one for your sewing supplies, another for your jewelry-making supplies, and a third for your paper supplies. These don't have to be expensive or fancy, but they should each have drawers that allow you to separate your tools so you can find them quickly. Clearly label each drawer. The size of each storage unit will depend on the number of supplies you have, of course.

Here are a few storage ideas for the crafts you mentioned:

1) Ball canning jars are wonderful for keeping fabric scraps contained, they look pretty on a shelf, and are clear so you know exactly what's in them. Organize by color as best as you can.

2) Pegboard (hung on a wall) and pegboard hooks can help you keep thread, scissors, etc. organized and in plain view.

3) A file folder organizer (typically used to hold file folders on an office desk) can hold many flat crafting items like rulers and die cutting templates.

4) An 18 inch x 24 inch artist portfolio/display book (with at least 24 sleeves) will beautifully and neatly hold vinyl cuts for your Silhouette.

5) Watchmaker's cases (those small, round, aluminum tins with clear lids) make accessing beads, jewelry clasps, and other jewelry-making supplies an easy task.

I do want to mention that it's very important, when enjoying many different crafts, that you limit your number of supplies. I used to pre-purchase a lot of scrapbooking supplies on a whim. That was expensive, and resulted in a lot of paper and embellishments that I ended up donating years later. These days, I print the photos I want to scrapbook and put them in an acid-free sheet protector...each layout in a separate protector. I bring those to the store (or shop online) and use them to choose the paper and embellishments for that particular layout. Now I never have an overload of supplies, which means I haven't exhausted my storage space...and I always use everything I purchase.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Yes, meow means something

What does it mean, you ask?

Good question. It's about the same as aloha in Hawaiian.

The meaning changes.

Context matters hugely. Is it a mean meow, or a friendly one?

What about the cat's body action? Is he facing towards you, or away? Is the tail curled, or lying flat against the floor?

Depending on these points, 'meow' could mean 'let's watch a movie together' or 'boy am I thirsty right now.'

So getting the tone and body language right is critical.

Finally, there's a quick guide on the essentials of cat communication to open your ears (and your heart) into the fascinating world of feline communication, both verbal and nonverbal.

This guide, written by a PhD animal communications expert Dr Jonas Jurgella, is the missing link that allows you to bond with your own feline friend as if he was a human child.

That's the power of true and honest communication, vs the primitive 'animal baby talk' that so many pet owners unfortunately relegate themselves to.
