Do You Have Two Million Things Fighting for Your Attention

Has your attention ever been diverted from what you're currently doing? Maybe you're working at your kitchen table or desk and you look out the window. You think to yourself, 'It's starting to rain. Did I close my car windows? Is my garage door open?' Maybe you then see someone outside and think 'Who is that walking their dog out front?' Then your phone beeps and you think 'Who is sending me a text message?' You stop to look, and then your brain asks, 'Did I remember to put the clothes in the dryer? What are we going to have for dinner tonight?'

A friend of mine who was trying to get a photo sorting project done, and has been at it for months, recently said to me, 'it would be so great to get a project done, from start to finish, without having two million things fighting for my attention!'

We all have things that can easily distract us from being as productive as we could be. Sometimes these distractions are unavoidable. Sometimes, though, we actually invite these distractions into our lives without even realizing we're doing so.

Determine your distractions. Figure out what specifically it is that distracts you...and then make an effort to distance yourself from those things. Is it the constant notifications sounding on your phone? The dialog on the news program on your TV? The noise coming from outside an open window? Create some distance. If the phone is the culprit, put it in a separate room out of reach while you are trying to get some work done. The TV? Then keep it off while you are working. Outside noises may be less noticeable if you close the windows...or sit in a windowless room while you are working.

Sometimes the 'time of day' can be a distraction. Consider switching up the time of day when you try to complete certain tasks if possible. If the activity outside your window is constantly drawing your attention away from the work that you need to get done, try doing it at a different time when there may be fewer things to look at outside your window.

Get up an hour before the rest of your family members, or go to sleep an hour later, and you may find some focused time there.

Sometimes, it's not necessarily something outside distracting you, but something inside. For instance, if you regularly start doing one thing and then your mind diverts elsewhere...then your own mind is causing the distraction. To stay on track, try setting a timer for 10 minutes. Start doing what you intend to do. If the timer sounds and you're not doing your original task...stop what you're doing and get back to whatever that original task was.

Also, not everyone can work for long marathon sessions. While some people can start organizing a basement at 6 in the morning and still be working on it at 6 in the evening, other people may lose their energy and enthusiasm 15 minutes into the project. Know your focus limits and work within them. Working on something for 15 minutes and coming back to it tomorrow, is certainly better than not working on it at all.

Learn What Your Cat is Trying To Tell You With...

The Cat Language Bible

and speak with your cat

Yes, meow means something

What does it mean, you ask?

Good question. It's about the same as aloha in Hawaiian.

The meaning changes.

Context matters hugely. Is it a mean meow, or a friendly one?

What about the cat's body action? Is he facing towards you, or away? Is the tail curled, or lying flat against the floor?

Depending on these points, 'meow' could mean 'let's watch a movie together' or 'boy am I thirsty right now.'

So getting the tone and body language right is critical.

Finally, there's a quick guide on the essentials of cat communication to open your ears (and your heart) into the fascinating world of feline communication, both verbal and nonverbal.

This guide, written by a PhD animal communications expert Dr Jonas Jurgella, is the missing link that allows you to bond with your own feline friend as if he was a human child.

That's the power of true and honest communication, vs the primitive 'animal baby talk' that so many pet owners unfortunately relegate themselves to.

  In Closing

'I don't care how much power, brilliance or energy you have, if you don't harness it and focus it on a specific target, and hold it there you're never going to accomplish as much as your ability warrants.
